Well he is planning to leave NATO, so it will be the US against NATO. Sure the US has more weapons now, but unless billionaires start paying taxes instead of taking them, there's no way the US could maintain a sustained war against all of NATO. So the US would need to ally with Russia and even that might not be enough, so probably China too. That or China will take advantage of the chaos and turn on Trump since he and Xi aren't as friendly as Putin. It would be an interesting, if disastrous time to be alive.

Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

I really wish officials would stop giving this much public attention to the twitter ramblings of these two. They're clearly working putin's agenda of seeding disagreements between NATO countries. If he wants to put his money where his mouth is, he can go get his mad offer refused through proper diplomatic channels. But this pandering to every whacky tweet is like wrestling with pigs and really has no upside.
I'm sure it's so easy to ignore when it's not the president of the US directly threatening the existence of your country
The hilarious part is that the only adversary we have that would make Greenland relevant to national defense is Russia.
The way the news media broadcasts this shit is embarrassing. I wouldn't mind if they made it a headline, but it should be tempered with good journalism. Maybe ask why Greenland would be important to our defense? Or maybe who came up with the idea and how they are qualified to make such statements.
Threats by the most expensive army in the world cannot really be ignored. To be able to ignore Trump completely is a privilege.
Powerful threats become boots on the ground real quick.
It's not really ignorable, though. If it was just Trump the private citizen rambling this nonsense, sure. But it's the President (elect) of the United States.
Elections have consequences and this is one that the US can't wave off. They put their mad king on the world stage, they own the boos he gets.
Where's Jaime Lannister when you need him?
No upside to Americans maybe. Tweets like this are intended for the electorates of their respective countries, where hating on Trump is still a very easy way to win favourability.
He's trying to manufacture consent among his base.
what is his obsession with Greenland coming from?
I suspect it's one of those topics he likes to drum up if he needs to distract from something else.
(My suspicion is that this other topic is the walking back on campaign promises on immigration with the H1B visa thing)
That doesn't mean it's not still harmful. This stuff does harm relations with America's European allies, but I suspect that he is not actually planning on doing anything.
An alternative explanation could be that he simply wants to get his hands on a very resource rich area such as Greenland.
I bet you're right. That's one promise that I'm sure he would like to have forgotten as quickly as possible.
Billionaire backed mining firm wants to mine greenland for metals which trump will get a cut from.
My guess is the oil
My guess is the oil
Exactly.
And probably many other resources, like traderoutes and territories. In the Northpole there is another " cold war" going on as the ice is melting. There are conflicting claims from USA,Canada, Europe, but also from China and Russia.
From the artic institute( USA):
"In 2009, global interest in the Arctic surged when the US Geological Survey estimated the Arctic held 13 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the world’s natural gas. That same year, the US hosted the Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting to reaffirm cooperation.(..)
"Climate change has rapidly transformed the Arctic, making previously inaccessible areas more available for economic and strategic use. The North Sea Route (NSR) and the Northwest Passage (NWP) could become economically viable by 2023"
So climate change has inspired them to...speed up climate change by drilling in the Arctic
fascist imperialistic tendencies
I mean what's France gonna do, protest about it, bend over, and roll with it?
Out of all nuclear-capable nations, France's nuclear doctrine is absolutely the most terrifying one.
Most nations maintain a second strike doctrine, e.g. they won't fire first but will immediately retaliate. Some states also allow themselves to strike in case of extreme threats, e.g. WMDs.
France allows itself to fire a nuke as a warning shot.
Denmark is a NATO country along with France. They'd be forced to intercede along with most of the rest of Eastern Europe.
