Summary

France’s foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, warned Donald Trump against threatening EU sovereign borders after Trump suggested potential military action to control Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Barrot dismissed such actions as unacceptable and noted the return of “the law of the strongest.”

Trump previously called Greenland essential to U.S. economic security, though Denmark and Greenland’s leaders firmly rejected any sale.

Trump Jr.’s brief visit to Nuuk further escalated tensions.

My understanding that they are expected to posess economically valuable territorial waters as climate change continues to melt sea ice.

I suspect it's one of those topics he likes to drum up if he needs to distract from something else.
(My suspicion is that this other topic is the walking back on campaign promises on immigration with the H1B visa thing)

That doesn't mean it's not still harmful. This stuff does harm relations with America's European allies, but I suspect that he is not actually planning on doing anything.

An alternative explanation could be that he simply wants to get his hands on a very resource rich area such as Greenland.

I bet you're right. That's one promise that I'm sure he would like to have forgotten as quickly as possible.

My guess is the oil

Exactly.

And probably many other resources, like traderoutes and territories. In the Northpole there is another " cold war" going on as the ice is melting. There are conflicting claims from USA,Canada, Europe, but also from China and Russia.

From the artic institute( USA):

"In 2009, global interest in the Arctic surged when the US Geological Survey estimated the Arctic held 13 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30 percent of the world’s natural gas. That same year, the US hosted the Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting to reaffirm cooperation.(..)

"Climate change has rapidly transformed the Arctic, making previously inaccessible areas more available for economic and strategic use. The North Sea Route (NSR) and the Northwest Passage (NWP) could become economically viable by 2023"

So climate change has inspired them to...speed up climate change by drilling in the Arctic
