At the time, she was the best candidate because she was the only one with the national name brand. The problem was that she didn't run a real primary, because if there was an open primary she might not have won.
California loves policing as a whole though. The measure to increase punishment for drugs and theft is already called for as a yes, that's a signal to me.

There's also the false logic of "if my vote doesn't go to someone who wins then it's wasted."
