[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

I don't know about balkanization but here are some maps that show states divided by political policies. These maps show an interesting pattern.

States which ban gender affirming care

States which have "right to work" law. Unions are banned from forming employment agreements with companies.

States which ban same sex marriage in their state constitution

States where abortion is currently illegal

States which have laws against boycotting Israel

States with legal marijuana, inverse compared to the other maps

So basically, balkanization is gonna look something like this:

Something I made up based on how consistently shitty each state is in the political divide maps

it's that shitty Civil War movie that just came out

[–] Erika3sis@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I figured as much, because it doesn't exactly strike me as realistic.

The Texas and California alliance is especially funny

alt/spec fiction writers understanding even basic politics challenge: impossible

[–] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

I'm guessing the movie Civil War? Some of the names vaguely ring a bell

How is South Carolina in the Loyalist States, lmfao

[–] Nakoichi@hexbear.net 12 points 4 months ago (1 children)

No because it's always some chauvinist bullshit.

What about a drainage map? Hard to Mad Max without potable water.

[–] Beetle_O_Rourke@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The only realistic answer IMHO

[–] HumanBehaviorByBjork@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

the airplane exists. waterways have not been the arteries of rapid trade for over a century.

[–] emizeko@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

good luck shipping water for irrigation in an airplane

Well, I don't have a map, exactly, but what I will say is that the Balkanization of the United States only happens after it annexes Canada and that the first state to secede is Quebec. Trust me on this, I'm a certified time traveler with a license to meddle with the timeline.

just take a crayon and keep drawing squiggles until you get bored

The way western Ukraine is cut off and part of central europe amuses me knowing how it's the most fascist-ised area of the country.

[–] huf@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

that's probably what makes it central europe then

[–] allthetimesivedied@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

Nobody has any fucking idea at all what it will look like—except that it will be fucking Hell on Earth.

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

I doubt a proper "Balkanization" would ever happen, too much capital tied up in the US Federal Govt for the hate-bourgeois to ever let that happen.

What you're probably gonna see is states just slowly drifting way legally and economically from Washington. Never fully succeeding, but just disregarding the Federal government with increasing blatancy, beefing up their State Police forces to the point they almost function as a local small military, taking more direct control over their local natural resources, maybe even regulating travel and trade between themselves and other States. The Kingdom will stay intact but the Provincial Lords will gain increasing autonomy.

This will make Red States hell on Earth for a lot of people, but while I don't have any faith in the Dems, more left leaning states may actually become more progressive in response.
