Nintendo: “OUR STICKS ARE PERFECT. IN FACT, WE WILL BE BRINGING BACK N64 JOYSTICKS FOR OUR NEXT CONSOLE. PLEASE UNDERSTAND “
Nah bro they're actually switching back to the 3DS circle pad for enhanced portability
That'd be an improvement over the garbage sticks they put in their joycons.
Big brain move right there 👀
While this seems good, rumors have been floating around for years. I’m definitely excited to see what’s coming next, but I’m going to need some more solid proof before I get my hopes up
I bet when TotK sales begin to slump, we'll see switch 2 with a TotK console upgrade/re-release at a higher fps and resolution.
I assume they timed Switch 2, based on this.
Take my money.
I just hope that the next console is backward compatible with the Switch, so I can play all of the games I have bought from the eShop. I wouldn’t even mind a sort of hybrid model where the games play exactly as they are on switch, and developers could release optional updates to take advantage of the new hardware
If this was true, I wouldn’t even be mad. The jank in some games is really starting to show particularly when you switch (heh) from a current gen console running at 4K to a 1080p display res on the Switch and then the game’s res is further brought down to maintain a solid frame rate in docked mode. It’s time for a beefed up Switch.
I'd bet against this - seems like a very not-Nintendo move.
The closest I can think of might have been delaying BOTW for so long so it could go from being Wii U-exclusive to a dual release helping to launch the Switch. But as much as Nintendo loves remaking games, I don't think they'd launch a new console with a remake of the most recent Zelda game.
I'd bet on the new console launching with a 1-2 punch of both Mario Kart 9, and a brand new main series Zelda or Mario game.
With how weird the new Mario game is, I swore that it was going to end with a Switch 2 announcement. Even in the direct they never mention that the game will be on Switch (though the standalone trailer does).
Did they mention anything about its release timeline? It may not be out of the question that it's a dual release if it's far enough out. Though launching with a 2D Mario game would seem a bit ballsy to me
This October
Ah. Oh well...
The longer the better, as far as I'm concerned - the Switch is my favorite console of all time, and I'm afraid they're going to change what made it great.
I think that a new Zelda is years away, but the Switch’s successor will come out next year or early 2025 at the latest.
I do expect Mario Kart 9 and a new 3D Mario at launch.
I think they’ll release a Tears of the Kingdom “Deluxe” a few months later (similar to what they did with Mario Kart 8 on the Switch). Enough people want a higher-res TotK that it’s worth making, but banking on an upscaled port as a launch title isn’t something they’d do.
We all know the switch pro comes out /r/tomorrow!
That said… we should bring that subreddit to lemmy.
I know we've been hearing stuff about this for years but it seems more plausible for early dev kits to be out there now given the aging hardware of the original, that is assuming that a switch 2 is the path Nintendo will actually take. Either way I hope it has better ui.
I hope they don't touch the UI honestly.
I respect your opinion, and I understand where it's coming from, but I find the switches UI to be basically perfect. No fuss, no fuckabouts, just gets me into the game.
I know this is a super divisive topic on the internet, so I know you're not alone in your opinion. I just don't really see what else would be wanted because for me, it does literally everything I'd want it to do.
Iron out a few hiccups, Bluetooth audio quick access menu, eShop speed, but buy and large, I love the streamlinedness of the Switches UI.
What makes the switch genius level of engineering is the Switch System Software microkernel architecture. When the switch plays a game, it doesn’t have bloated tasks running in the background to render some ads in some shop app you probably won’t visit while playing, but only plays the game. This approach is totally mandatory to get anything to run on the switch’s ancient hardware, but it is also so beautiful and rare to see today from a technical point of view. Where Xbox and PlayStation are directly derived from a multi-purpose desktop PC, the switch is more closely related with consoles and handhelds of the past.
Therefore a lot of flashy UI elements pulling information from the Internet or animating with some “expensive” (in a performance sense) effects aren’t really feasible, since these would hog up system resources the switch doesn’t have to spare and isn’t even designed to be able to spare. I hope when Nintendo updates the switch they keep this philosophy alive and this would very probably lead to another clean UI.
What I really want from the UI is for it to be more like the 3DS. I just wanna customize my games into a 2D grid. With folders.
I fully accept that this feature is essentially pointless, and that the current system works for 95% of use cases, including my own - it's just an aesthetic preference.
I agree 100%. One of the reasons Switch got me back into gaming was the ease of picking up and getting into a game, and the minimalist UI is a part of that. Even opening Steam these days gets your eyeballs immediately flooded with ads, call to actions and other irritants, so it's nice to have at least one system that is only focused on playing games.
That's alright too. I just really wish it had the style and fun of the wii and wii u's menus.
These menus have been fun, but I think being able to boot the console and get into a game within 10 seconds is worth much more. I actively dreaded playing games on the Wii U, just because it took so long to boot into them. The only thing I really want changed with the Switch Menus is the terrible performance on web-based applications like the shop.
This could be Mercury Steam working on Metroid 6!
bobby kotick seemed to imply that the next console is more switch and backwards compatible, even if he didn't seem complete sure. regarding this rumor, ninty was proud of dread and sakamoto definitely has the internal clout to get mercury steam those dev kits. if it's true, it also means that bandai/capcom/SE etc probably has long had the dev kits as well.
