It's not that they're annoying per se, it's just frequently misused.
Ergo, use of per se is rarely apropos.
Definitely misued often. It's Latin for "on its own" so, if you swap out "per se" with "on its own" and the sentence doesn't make sense, you've misused it.
Its use in English may have evolved past the direct translation.
You just used it. Boom!
What if I hyphenate it and put it before the noun instead of after it?
Or what if I write it “per say”, which is so obviously correct that I won’t bother checking?
What alternative you're ok with?
