MODERATORS
It's not that they're annoying per se, it's just frequently misused.
Ergo, use of per se is rarely apropos.
Definitely misued often. It's Latin for "on its own" so, if you swap out "per se" with "on its own" and the sentence doesn't make sense, you've misused it.
Its use in English may have evolved past the direct translation.
