“The path to Everest is littered with the dead bodies of highly motivated people”

Is one of my mantras

[-] splatt9990@lemmy.ml 37 points 6 months ago

Fun fact: it's pretty much impossible to get those bodies down and there's not really anywhere to bury them on the mountain so they're literally laying pretty much wherever they died. They call that section of the mountain "Rainbow road" because of the multi-colored winter coats of the corpses you have to walk past to get to the summit.

[-] FriendBesto@lemmy.ml 12 points 6 months ago

It is impossible for many. It is just not worth the risk of making more dead bodies while trying to retrieve them. So they do not bother. Callous to some but that's reality. Hell some dead bodies are used as milestones or waypoints for some going up.

There a few though that have been lost over the years. And trying to find them is simply too risky. There was the body of a British lady who you could see a few years ago but no one can see her anymore. Likely just covered in snow/ice.

The similarities to MarioKart are… frightening…

"Friend, remember, it is not about the end goal but about the dead bodies of other motivated people you may encounter, along the way. Be wary of the denial that one day. it could be you, who serves the same purpose to those that come after you."

"If you like the view but don’t like climbing the mountain, you do not like hiking"

[-] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 43 points 6 months ago

“Fun” fact: “chain” saws were invented by an obstetrician to more quickly separate the pelvis for difficult childbirth.

Also consider: electricity, germ theory and anaesthetics were not developed at this point.

[-] IsoSpandy@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

We still use manual driven chain saws in orthopedics surgeries.

[-] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 0 points 6 months ago

Is that the osteotome, or is there a newer name?

[-] IsoSpandy@lemm.ee 2 points 6 months ago

Na na... The osteotome is a blade(if you want to call it that) with cutting surface on both sides. It is the bone saw

Osteotome

Bone saw

Apparently Google says both of them of as osteotome, but my medical books never referred to them as such... So who knows

Fun fact: Wikipedia has a shit ton of lists about how people die

Edit: a list of lists about death: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_deaths

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 months ago

I haven't checked the link but I suspect that list is very far from complete based on the url.

[-] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 0 points 6 months ago

My favorite list was list of murdered hip hop musicians.

[-] Potatos_are_not_friends@lemmy.world 14 points 6 months ago

Maybe i lack an adventurous spirit but if someone told me they climbed Mount Everest, I just think they're privilege is showing and apparently are the type to invent problems that don't need solving.

[-] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world -1 points 6 months ago

I know this must be a quote but also fuck it, hard agree man.

[-] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 13 points 6 months ago

[off topic]

"High Crimes" is a graphic novel about a disgraced Olympian who now carries dead bodies off Everest for a high fee.

[-] turkishdelight@lemmy.ml 11 points 6 months ago

Dying on Mount Everest is actually pretty easy to avoid.

[-] Roflmasterbigpimp@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago

There are many things I can get a kick out of and have played with in my mind, like seafaring. But climbing a damn rock, which just gets colder while it's getting harder to breathe? No, thank you.

[-] Sorgan71@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Everest is covered in dead bodies and poop

[-] orphiebaby@lemm.ee -1 points 6 months ago

And trash. Lots of trash.

MVP goes to the guy who died the second time he snowboarded down Everest 🏂

[-] Rodeo@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 months ago

I like to call a singular piece of trivia a trivion.

[-] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 6 months ago

It works on my me. My sense of self has been replaced by the Ralph Wiggum "I'm in danger" meme.

[-] cmder@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago
[-] asteriskeverything@lemmy.world -3 points 6 months ago

I wanna say fun fact but I lacking a source beyond a podcast episode. I do feel that fits the spirit of the meme tho so fun fact most childhood human trafficing victims are youth that identify with the LGBTQA+ and lost their entire support network after coming out. But that's not as appealing sooo
