Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • These rules are somewhat loosened when the subject is a public figure. Still, do not attack their person or incite harrassment.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn. Even if you watch it on a Linux machine.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

Why does Tux have a cute little mace? Is this the year he gets mediaeval on the world?

    [–] NickwithaC@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That looks like a star anise and a cinnamon stick for the tea.

    [–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

    It's a mace

    [–] agressivelyPassive@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And why is there snow on the inside of the window? Doesn't Tux know, that you need to heat to at least 19C and keep the humidity low to prevent mold?

I'm assuming he broke the window with the mace to get air conditioning

Switching from Ubuntu to Arch, because I spend more time disabling the default stuff than I do troubleshooting new stuff anyways.

    [–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 14 points 1 year ago

Arch with kde has been amazing. I'm coming up on my one year anniversary from using Ubuntu and switching to Arch.

I'm planning on building a new rig for Xmas and am gonna go Linux for my desktop OS for the first time.

make sure to go team red with the GPU, they tend to have less issues on Linux than NVIDIA cards

This year I made the switch on my gaming PC (Windows to Arch). Next year, my target is replacing my CNC controller system, probably using raspbian on a raspberry model 3. That will bring the Windows count down to 1, which is about as low as my household can go.

LinuxCNC is rock solid. I am a career machinist of 20 years and have used it to run work horse production machines without fault for years. Setting it up can be a nightmare, though. The fact that the distro is Debian based makes the reliability amazing, even after power outages etc. Just make sure you have a dedicated GPU or weirdness can happen.

I'm going to put together a SteamOS system for my daughter with an old 3900X and RX480 so we can play side by side!

    [–] victorz@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

    old 3900X

Oh God, I need to upgrade soon again, don't I...

OK hear me out, I'm going to install boxes on my arch install since I use arch btw, and install Windows 11 in a VM.

I'm then going to sign in with my Microsoft™️ account and give them all my data. Then after my free trail of McAfee™️ and Norton are install, and I play the free games that are included like Candy Crush Saga™️. My VM will evolve from just a VM to a M. I do this until the FBI van arrives as Microsoft sell my data to to Government, or until my beast of a machine slows to a crawl as Microsoft™️ takes more data trying to find a buyer.

Then I will install Oracle™️ VirtualBox™️, and try out new OS's like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. And when I settle on POP_OS I will free my M (since its prolonged suffering has evolved it from a VM), and install Linux.

Then I will find something wrong with the install, probably complain about SNAPs being an option, or that not all of the software is FOSS. Remove POP_OS and install arch.

TLDR I use arch BTW in both my ssd and my fake HDD on my ssd

I want to REALLY get into Linux I mean like using only a WM and not a DE. Learn nVim, make some cool Shell scripts and download graphene OS on my phone,

My work supports Linux which is great but they only really support Gnome which I hate.

My plans are to decide between Ubuntu or SUSE with Hyperland (cool but I'll have to support myself, which is fine but annoying)

    [–] TheInsane42@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Keep using Linux, for the 30th year. Started in '94 with Slackware 1.2, RedHat 1/1.1 in '95 and switched to Debian at the end of '95 (0.93 R5 or R6). I was running OS/2 for my BBS in that time, with a link to my Linux system with internet since august '95. I had a terminal with null-modem cable next to my bed for IRC, 10 Mbit connection at my room. (campus of UTwente in the Netherlands)

Was fun messing about with that stuff.

I'm switching to back to Linux for the first time in 8 years. Grew up on Mandrivia for no reason other than that's what my dad liked, got a MacBook for school, and now that my OS isn't getting updates I want something fresh and free! Thinking of getting my toes wet with Linux Mint :)

    [–] OneShotLido@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I've been away from Linux for about a decade. Currently setting up Docker, and struggling with subuid and subgid. I'll get there eventually, but man, this shit has really changed since I've been gone. Loving the challenge though.

    [–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago

hi tux, I am hoping I don't have to see the end of next year.

    [–] Stitch0815@feddit.de 6 points 1 year ago

Add a Javascript dependency into the kernel. You're welcome.

    [–] furycd001@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

Been using XFCE on Linux for somewhere around 20 years. In the new year I wish to try switching fulltime to a wm & maybe even wayland....

    [–] onlinepersona@programming.dev 6 points 1 year ago

I plan to continue using linux 👍

    [–] MigratingtoLemmy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Install a non-systemd distribution on an old thinkpad. I'm sure I can make him the happiest compared to the rest of you miserable plebs \s

    [–] shiroininja@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I plan to continue development of native Linux apps and learning proper app packaging

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I cannot move to Linux despite desperately wanting too. I am a VR developer and right now you do not have any open source game engine options that support VR and due to the SDKs I work with, I am tied to Windows right now. Given that spatial computing is the next platform, I really hope Linux options develop but it is not looking likely.

Set up a bunch of self hosted apps on my pi 4 (Nextcloud is erm, next) to completely end my reliance on public cloud.

Use the Grocy instance I already have on that pi to plan recipes and eat healthy (after gorging myself like a drunken pig between now and new year's day.)

This weekend's job though, set up a quick 'n' dirty torrent box/ NAS with an old laptop for festive movie watching before building a better solution out of an old desktop once I have the cash sometime around summer.

I wanna ditch the unFFOS and be in control of all of my os, not just where the big companies that make it want me to be in control. I pay quite a few fees to live commercial free, and now they are using my login splashscreen to offload Xbox game pass.... Also, how about some banners about office365 in your start menu? I paid for this os, you bunch of potatopeels! I Tried Ubuntu back in the day, around 10 years ago and it was fine (except for gaming), but I hear everyone here is pretty stoked about Mint for starters, so I'll start there.

Also recently bought Ableton Live because LMMS is not capable enough. You win some you lose some

    [–] 0x4E4F@infosec.pub 5 points 1 year ago

I can't wait to repackage a lot of old software I didn't know had Linux binaries available.

    [–] aggelalex@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just bought a raspberry pi 5 and I'll be SSHing hard this year

I've dipped my toes in Linux a few times over the years, but after Windows started pushing ads to the start menu, the lock screen, and the Edge Collections pane, they pushed pushed me off the cliff.

I'll continue using my awesome setup I created. I have proxmox cluster with docker hosting Nextcloud, Jellyfin and a bunch of other services.

I especially like Jellyfin as I have a bunch of content and live TV. (DVRs rock)

    [–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Same thing I did with it this year. Send emails, write documents, watch movies, watch YouTube, play KSP and Astroneer, program some c++, design hobby PCBs, look at porn...

The fat little happy penguin never resonated with me. And I think it poorly reflects the community. Hence, I'm in favor of a new mascot: tox.

Of course, you can put arbitrary distro logos on it.
