What the actual fuck. They are not even an American company. US does really try to dismantle Europe.

[–] menas@lemmy.wtf 1 points 18 minutes ago

Proton AG do not depend of the European Union. It's a Switzerland company, that snitched ecelogist activist to french intelligence. Swiss is very conservative, with a lot of disdain for foreign workforce. I don't see any contradiction.

Oh shit he was a Trump apologist already in 2016. Look at this awesome whataboutism.

https://proton.me/blog/trump-control-nsa-privacy

It is not Trump’s fault

It is tempting to blame all this on Trump, but that is taking the easy way out. All Trump does is put a new face on the existing privacy problem, so now it concerns a segment of the population that previously didn’t care as much. Proton Mail users have always come from both the left and right side of the political spectrum. Today, we are seeing an influx of liberal users, but Proton Mail has also long been popular with the political right, who were truly worried about big government spying, and the Obama administration having access to their communications. Now the tables have turned.

The same terror the political right has experienced is now being felt in liberal bubbles such as Silicon Valley for the first time. The left is correct to be terrified of a Trump-led NSA snooping on their communications, especially since Silicon Valley giants like Google and Facebook can be forced to spy on users on behalf of Trump’s NSA. However, this precedent was not set by Trump – he hasn’t even taken office yet. The first major incident of a US tech giant being complicit in US government spying actually took place in 2015 under the Obama administration(new window).

Can someone remind me about the terror campaigns we had against the political right before Trump was elected?

"maybe you shouldn't be such an asshole"

"Oh my God! It's a terrorist!"

[–] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 3 points 49 minutes ago

Pretty much all I can imagine.

patiently waiting for Eppie

Wonder if he'll change his tune when Trump starts going after people using their messages?

[–] SleafordMod@feddit.uk 18 points 3 hours ago

Can Trump's incoming administration really be said to stand "for the little guys" when it's full of millionaires and billionaires?

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 14 points 4 hours ago

What Trump really means here is "big tech has run amok they need to kiss my ring first and then they can do whatever the fuck they like". He has identified big tech companies as a key component to cement his future dictatorship and he is not wrong.

CEOs having a "who can suck off Trump best" contest?

Gonna need to expand this

[–] PanArab@lemm.ee 2 points 31 minutes ago

You are missing class analysis. Fascism is good for business and wealth accumulation.

[–] rando@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

This is how it's feeling like, last few weeks. I'll somehow need to justify keeping my proton plan

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Yeah I'm in the same boat, I mostly use the VPN I wonder what security it actualy gives now.

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 2 points 38 minutes ago

It never gave you any, that claim that every VPN provider makes about security and privacy is mostly false. It saves you from like two types of attacks that are so specific I can almost guarantee you you never encountered them in the wild. They also make it 10% harder for your local provider to keep tabs on you at the expense of introducing another very specific ledger of everything you do, that belongs to a trump loving company apparently, and unlike your ISP they are legallly allowed to do whatever they want with it.
It's not what VPN is for.

For my fellow German readers: An affordable green alternative to Proton hosted in Berlin is Posteo. https://posteo.de/ 1€ / month to have your mail hosted by a non-shitty company is a small price.

[–] AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

This is unbelievably disappointing. Just canceled my annual membership (which was set to renew in ~2 weeks).

Looks like I'll be moving to Tuta tomorrow.

[–] NewAgeOldPerson@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Okay I'm researching tuta now .. I have a 2 year sub already though. Was literally in the process of moving from Gmail. Self hosted is tough for me. I guess this is the new normal. Milkshake duck....

[–] pipes@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 minutes ago

My suggestion is, get yourself a domain with email included (I know a few european providers that I tested personally but I bet most of them include a mail service, even if it isnt advertised in the product page), can be had for as cheap as 6€/year. Test it out see if it's enough and it works with third party email clients that you like.

Then later you can also purchase a dedicated mail service on top (but separately) of your domain, starting from 1€/month usually; the advantage to just the barebone approach is a nicer dedicated web interface, apps, support, etc. But it's optional.

I'm wary instead of these all-in-one hefty and pricy (for personal use) services like Proton, do we really need all this interoperability between a drive storage and email and calendar? I think that's the job of the operating system. Is copy-pasting a link to a different app really that inconvenient?

Dems had a choice between the progressive wing (Bernie Sanders, etc), versus corporate Dems, but in the end money won and constituents lost.

Not wrong there…

[–] Nalivai@lemmy.world 1 points 36 minutes ago

Well, dems went with the popular vote.

[–] blind3rdeye@lemm.ee 29 points 5 hours ago

Yeah, that's true. But going on to say 'therefore support Trump' is ... not good.

I think it's unwise for Proton to try to support any political party. Agreeing or disagreeing with decisions and policies is fair and good; but to say "this is the party who supports the little guy" is a bullshit and unnecessarily divisive.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

Why are there no reports and outrage over the pick of Gail Slater? Doesn't she fit the standard outrage mold? She does seem to be pretty vehemetly anti-big tech. She has driven monopoly cases against VISA, Google and Apple. Surprisingly sober choice as assistant attorney general.

If this is suppose to be "Full MAGA", then i don't understand where you draw lines.

[–] chandlerbung@lemmy.cafe 15 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Fuck Proton than.

What's a good alternative I can use?

[–] Shou@lemmy.world 7 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

God damnit. I just swotched to Proton this week

[–] Covenant@sh.itjust.works 1 points 46 minutes ago

Yeah same for me. I took the blackfriday deal... Now i have a year to find an alternative.

[–] sudoer777@lemmy.ml 4 points 4 hours ago

Riseup and Disroot are run by collectives, Tuta uses a similar business model to Proton, Mailbox.org + Guard looks decent as well and more open than either Proton or Tuta

[–] Panda@lemmy.today 23 points 7 hours ago

It seems the guy keeps digging a bigger and bigger hole for himself. Sigh...

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 30 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

By the “little guys” he means himself.

By himself he means corporate CEOs.

[–] sudneo@lemm.ee 3 points 4 hours ago

Well, if he means tech companies that generally get smothered by unfair competition due to tech monopolies, as I believe he does, he is right to refer to them as the little guy.

Also let's not forget that he is the tech CEO of a company which offers great products that don't harm users, that raised tons of money for other nonprofits in the privacy space and that ceded control to a nonprofit to ensure they stay consistent with those values. He is for sure not a regular Joe, but comparing him to a regular corporate CEO is disinformation IMHO.

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 36 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I migrated my custom domains to Tuta and canceled my Proton subscription as a result of all of this.

And Proton had fucking better give me a prorated refund.

[–] NewAgeOldPerson@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

I need to do this. I hope I can get my money back but they can choke on it if not I guess.

I checked archive and it wasn’t saved to the wayback machine so I added it in case proton deletes it. https://web.archive.org/web/20250115163936/https://proton.me/blog/trump-control-nsa-privacy

That’s a nice one to rub Andy’s nose in. I’ll put that one in my cancellation note.
