Fediverse vs Disinformation

440 readers
169 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Ok but even if that was real…what the fuck is $1300 going to achieve here? Sandwiches for a few of those affected?

[–] hate2bme@lemmy.world 64 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That's the point of the fake pic

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 weeks ago

Oh lol at first glance I thought it was the cheque that was fake.

He could make a real difference by throwing paper towel rolls at them

[–] Hydra_Fk@reddthat.com 7 points 4 weeks ago

Lol like me giving a penny to a homeless guy.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 56 points 4 weeks ago

Of course it is fake. Trump donating any money to anything that isn't a self-profiting grift should be the first red flag.

[–] imPastaSyndrome@lemm.ee 51 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh you mean a check written to "Trump Manic Mar MAIFAL" isn't real?

[–] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 15 points 4 weeks ago

yeah obviously it’s supposed to say "Trump Manic Mar Covfefe".

So this picture was made in satire but i first I thought they meant the photo op was real but that the promise of a check was fake.

I just naturally assumed Trumps team first decided to offer something that fits his budget, supporters wont notice as long as its shows then 3 digits on the sign anyway. After the shoot was done they decided they had what they needed and not even bother to send it.

$100 for fake big cheque
$100 to get somebody to come take the picture

Donation could have been $1500 and done without needing everybody to know about it.

The amount is also extremely low for somebody to brag about.

What was that whole super bowl commercial fiasco where some company spent 30-some-million to advertise they donated $250,000 to something

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Sometimes I wish companies like this would just get fined 30 million which gets donated to the cause they bragged about.

I can literally do better myself and I'm behind on rent.

In reality Trump raised 7 mil (last I checked) on a gofundme, his campaign raised 12 mil. He was then dragged through the dirt by people for "pocketing 97% of the funds" when in reality some dude didn't understand that gofundme takes 3%.

[–] hessenjunge@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Never heard any of this. Source?

So, no there is only the gofundme. 7 mil is not nothing though. I hope this really reaches the people in need.

I tried to find evidence of Trump being personally involved and came up with nothing. Did he publicly talk about this effort or even donate himself?

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Did you not understand? Trump is keeping the money, just like he always does. When will you people learn that a leopard can't change its spots?

I’m aware of the Trump family’s track record especially regarding charities. I’m also aware of the current grifts (crypto, merch, etc). I’m just trying to be less adversarial towards op.
