Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

I for one am shocked to hear that the obviously superior forces are still winning the same way they have been since the start

I had an acquaintance in real life tell me Russians were resorting to grabbing old Mosins out of museums to arm their soldiers in 2022 what-the-hell

[–] red_stapler@hexbear.net 39 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It was plucky when Ukraine mounted a maxim gun on a convertible BMW or whatever tho.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 35 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I had a......person I knew, tell me in the summer of 2022 how he was now allowed to be racist against all russians and solemnly stating how russians only know how to do mass assaults with all the men and it didnt work for them this time just like it didnt work during the winter war. He was an insufferable redditor so I'm sure he thinks that the ukrainean casualty numbers for russians are accurate

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Another person told me everything that happened in Ukraine since 2014 is good because even dying in a war is preferrable to living under a Russian puppet government like in Belarus

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago

finnish people are certifiably not okay

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 23 points 1 month ago

So I assume that they're going to find a way to die if Trump wins again right?

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This person you knew should probably look up who won the winter war.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Look, buddy. The Winter War and Continuation War are propagandized to hell and back in Finland. It's like 50% of our national character, that we murdered so many soviets that we actually basically won. I remember being really weirded out when I first heard that we lost the war, because none of our teaching or documentaries or anything actually just say how badly we ate shit.

I've heard that about Mosins as well, with the sole proof being a single photo of an irregular holding a sniper Mosin, which is of course still a perfectly valid weapon to use even in 202x

I've also seen this claim made baselessly about T-34s, as if Russia somehow has any functional combat ready T-34s left since 1960

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago

Russia pulling T-34s out of a giant vat of cosmoline like a mammoth sucked into a tar pit but in reverse

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's a ridiculous claim considering the MASSIVE back stock of AKs Russia has. Seriously I could buy them dusting off older AK from an old Soviet warehouse but, museum Mosins? The fuck?

[–] Dolores@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

there are over twice the number of kalashnikovs out there than all mosin nagants ever made lol

Militaristic world superpower has more firearms, tech, and manpower than relatively small country??? Who knew

[–] P1d40n3@hexbear.net 56 points 1 month ago (1 children)

A horrifying waste of lives. Fuck the entire West for encouraging this slaughter.

With that said, I have a hard time believing that Russia will really 'win' this war. Even if they take the lands they are liberating, Ukraine promises to be a failed rump state, a playground for CIA and other western terrorists, Nazi's with nothing to lose. I can easily imagine the terrorism that will take place 'post-war', with lots of bombings and massacres all over the world. Ukraine is the next Afghanistan, and the whole world will cry out in pain as the Banderites unleash their bloody dreams.

I'm not usually a doomer, but the simple facts I see point me toward a never-ending insurgency, with endless Western backing. And of course, the blow back that comes as well...

[–] Ericthescruffy@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think it was established pretty early on that Ukraine being a failed state is, for all intents and purposes, a win for Russia. It's preferable to them being a NATO member at least.

[–] P1d40n3@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I guess my point is that I fail to see to much of a difference. A failed state can still be a NATO springboard (see: Libya). Even if this ends in some kind of treaty, how long until Moscow is back in the same spot again?

[–] StalinStan@hexbear.net 26 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I am entetnally frustrated that when talking to a Ukraine supporter they cannot tell me one good thing about Ukraine that is with fighting for. Russia sucks, but it taking over Ukraine would be an upgrade

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 29 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's so surreal to see how libs continue bleating about western values, democracy, etc. while Ukraine has objectively become a dictatorship at this point.

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

"but they've been forced to do so because of the war started by the evil Rooskies"

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Amusingly the same logic is now being applied in order to cut back on human rights in Europe as well. Measures have to be taken to protect the fragile and naive public from evil Russian propaganda.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

We're good because we're not THEM, nevermind that we're doing all the shit that we say makes them evil and inhuman, we have to do it because otherwise THEY would win, and they would do all the things we're doing, which we have to do to stop them from doing all the things we're doing, which we have to do to stop them from doing all the things we're doing, which we have to do to stop them from doing all the things we're doing, which we have to do to sto

Yep, Russian news is basically censored across the continent, and travel sanctions effectively mean you can't meet any Russians in person either.

Just in case we see them as actual human beings or something.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

the crazy part is how easily this stuff became normalized

[–] VILenin@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago

We’re fighting for democracy, how dare you suggest we hold elections, you will be locked up until you acknowledge the democratic nature of our glorious nation.

Russia is doing this with nothing but shovels. Imagine what will happen if Russians invent Muskets.
