What I find works pretty well is to have the bag ready and put the first item into it and then set it down on the bAgGiNg ArEa together
I had an ex who couldn't fathom why in a walking dead/fallout scenario I'd personally not choose to trade with gold, but actual useful and tangible goods like food, ammo, salt, skills...
Their whole argument was gold has always been valuable so it'll always be valuable and I was like "the fuck good would gold do me when I'm starving"

Back when I signed up for reddit, you didn't need an email and they warned you if you lost your password you'd be locked out of your account until you regained it and they would not offer support to reset it
I liked that. I don't want to have to submit my email for everything just to interact

I've been in similar situations before as others have commented; needing to rely on some service in order to have a place to live food to eat, and a chance to get a leg up. Fortunately they weren't too preachy and respected the diverse backgrounds we all hailed from
