Looks like their attempt at a video streaming app, separate from youtube.

While this account is an alt, I still interact with beehaw daily, including posting etc.

That said I, too, have tempered my activity. To put it bluntly, largely because of the news and politics posts. I have seen where even mods are calling anything right of european left "far right" and extremists.

I am not particularly left leaning, but it entirely depends on the topic. On many social topics I lean left, on other things, im quite moderate. On fiscal stuff Im either moderate or right. But calling sources like thehill.com far right extremist trash (See the post about young men leaning right), or anything remotely libertarian (which in its own is a spectrum of people) far right doesnt jive with me. I find it antithetical to the principles here. Its done in a perjorative way and one thats clearly not meant to encourage conversation or discussion.

So in a way, Beehaw is not as inclusive as they really want to profess or open to discussion or others opinions (if they are the wrong ones). And rather than getting cajoled or even have mods ban me I have simply pulled back.

Finally I have also seen some communities (and here again Ill point out news@beehaw or politics@beehaw) suddenly having moderation tactics that are HYPER focused (ie: US politics only, but not something that is used as a political football, or US News only) And frankly theres not the scale or participation ot have UK NEws, Canada News, US News Europe News etc.

Couple that with point 1 and again, I have just kind of pulled back a bit

Heres the rub though. If thats what Beehaw wants, Im all for it. Its their call. I am one that doesnt mind having my views challenged if its done in good faith and in a respectful way. That is waht I came to beehaw hoping to get. But it does seem that the mob mentality is taking root and the "us vs them" stuff hasnt been shaken.

He was. One of the better dogs I’ve ever owned. Was in effect a therapy dog for our other pup that struggles with people. And always more tolerant than he should have been with the kids.

It was a long time coming. He had tumors in his throat and nose and eventually his quality of life suffered too much. Just sucks.

He’s also the first death that hit my youngins hard. My 5 year old has struggled the most. Has some disturbing anecdotes since. Having to choke back your own thoughts/processing to explain it to kids is hard. Harder than I thought

The housing market, especially in Florida and ESPECIALLY in south florida is a giant bubble right now.

This has happened before. The early 2000's saw a similar bubble that finally popped ~2008. In the early 2000's I saw a ton of people ditching their careers to get their Real Estate license. Didnt pan out well for them and its not gonna pan out for this guy.

This bubble is a bit different in that its not so much fueled by mortgage backed securities and pushes to get people on variable rate mortgages to they can be pumped and dumped into credit default swaps. This one is much more, at least in florida, tied to folks trying to escape regulations and lockdown from COVID up north and coming down to florida where properties are historically cheaper per sq ft and acre and buying up real estate in cash. But still, its going to pop. Many locals cant afford to buy now, or even rent in some cases as many arent even buying a primary residence here just vacation/airbnb homes. But its still a bubble that will see some major regressions. Especially if the urban sprawl problem gets taken head on (which I dont see happening anytime soon givent he current political climate).

Not to belittle the heat wave, the effect of the water break change doesn’t come into effect o until September. So they aren’t really related as of yet, other than shitty and coincidental timing.

There’s multiple sources mentioning this. But here’s one.

My trait is I think cars are too digital and should be analogue. Giant touch panels are distracting and have generally bad UI design. You can control an A/C with 3 dials, 4 if you have zones and don’t need to look down at all. Pinnacle of engineering.

I will never own a car that has features behind a paywall or that I can’t directly control. Computer cars are fine as long as I have root.

Right. Agree. But searching for communities, especially those outside your instance can be wonky. Finding communities and grouping like communities across instances is difficult as it currently sits. And it takes a bit of understanding how to search to find things.

I dont see most less technical users moving at all without some more UI maturity. The whole federated services thing is just a bit too abstract a concept for most. And right now its difficult to find/join communities outside your instance.

My hope is they add multi communities of some sort. Where you can

A. Group like communities together and browse them by topic, similar to multireddits

And/or

B. Certain communities can join forces and automatically cross-post with each other to reduce duplication and fragmentation while still splitting load

How technically feasible the latter is, I don’t know. But it would be cool. I’m still prettt new to this type of setup.

I don’t think they reacted incorrectly tbh. The thing of it was that this was one of the first times it became “mainstream” and was mentioned in MSM on the likes of CNN. So it brought an influx of users, more so than past surges. This overall the culture changed quite a lot.

Prior you could use Reddit as a news source. In fact MSM was using stuff trending there to “break” news to larger audiences. They did similar with Boston…and got it wrong.

Overall once that happened it shined a spotlight on the site. And some of the unsavory subreddits were reported on. But more importantly witch hunts became MUCH more prevalent. Anyone feeling slighted would try and engage Reddit to harass people. And more and more joined.

There were times where this happened before. It happened to a user named Saydrah in the earlier days who was a mod of some subreddit. But it was much more prevalent and frankly dangerous. Instead of sending pizzas to a house it was all night harassment and death threats.

So the admins started curating the main page. Making sure the likes of creepshots subreddits werent there. Or super emergent news wasn’t there, because the Chris Dorner thing didn’t help either. Overall it just changed the culture from one of a series of communities to something a bit more…risky.

Hell I have had people that disagreed with my stances around that time. Thankfully I practiced some basic opsec, but they certainly harassed some poor person thinking it was me. It’s made me very cagey about being online and frankly being honest with my opinions that may be less….mainstream.

It was quite a long while ago. This post was her finally coming up for air some months after all the hullabaloo.

That was before spez came back though. And it was kn0thing that demanded it. Pretty dramatic at the time.

I’ve been on Reddit over 17 years now. Shame what they are doing but it’s been pretty downhill after the Boston Bomber fiasco and them changing their front page algo to whitelist only and artificial delays to avoid the giant witch-hunts that happened then.
