I don't follow her actual social media anymore, I just see what gets posted here soo it's quite possible I've missed it.. but it occurred to me the other day, while I was at the beach, that I have seen this woman in more bathing suits than I've seen myself. BUT I've never actually seen her get into any water? Lol.. like, what is the point? She really just wants the validation of being told she's beautiful, to get those likes via semi-nude videos, and it really has nothing to do with confidence or the clothes at all. Like, c'mon TBP, DO A CANNONBALL! How are people not bored to death of this?

Hi! Sorry to ping an older thread, but (with your help) I just got around to finally downloading an app for Lemmy on my phone. So this is partially a test to see how it works (check check), but also I had a question I felt would be more likely to be answered here than out in the larger Fediverse (did I use that right? lol)

.. soo on the lemmy.ca website, I was able to see both the upvotes and downvotes for each post/comment. On the app client I selected (Sync), it just shows the total. (For example: if a comment has 8 upvotes and 2 downvotes, it only shows the "score" of 6) but honestly I found it really interesting to see both numbers. Is there any way I can do that with the app? It doesn't really change anything functionally, but I dunno, I guess I'm just nosey 😅

Anyway, thanks for this post! It was a big help 😊

She only hit 2.4 mil followers because she bought them, though. But I guess if anyone believes their own hype, it's definitely her.

Are you close friends with this person? If you are, perhaps you can kindly point out the pitfalls of influencer culture. If not, it may be best to just unfollow. If it's an acquaintance, you'll still see em when you see em - they probably won't even notice. If you don't even know them personally, just unfollow without remorse. I'm finding it's better to be ruthless in curating your SM feeds because it can be a tricky slope from mildly irritating to daily rage lol

She's not technically lying, because she's actually using Tiktok & Snapchat filters 🥰

Yup - the left is what she (The Birds Papaya) shares on her IG, the right was taken by a professional photographer. These pictures are from the same day. She claims to be a "body positive" influencer. Perhaps now you can understand a bit better why she has a community of "haters" 🤪

I love that you're here, welcome! 😍💓✨️

I know the consensus before was that Getty Images probably wouldn't bother photoshopping any non-celebrity face, but I can't get over how ridiculous her nose looks in the right-hand picture. I just don't fully believe that can be true. I mean, are these nostrils for ants?! 😅

Marketing 101: what are people insecure about? Tap into it and sell them the solution.

Yes, they are absolutely banking on their audience's lack of critical thinking skills. I get it—most people see a post on social media, take it at face value, and move on. But I think that's what makes influencer marketing so insidious: it's manipulative and based on a false narrative meant to sell products, without being as forthright as an ad or commercial. Birdie's supporters don't see her as a salesperson; they see her as a friend, as a brave woman fighting for women's empowerment. Meanwhile, she's just trying to get you to buy a bathing suit.

Yes!! TBP is particularly infuriating because she reduces women to mere consumerists, whose loftiest goal should be to "wear the bikini". I saw a comment somewhere on IG that said TBP on the runway, was "the most important movement for women" and I wanted to scream. Surely women are capable of much more! She stands for nothing of importance, but is held up as some sort of paragon of women's empowerment. It's so twisted.
