I won't give too many details because this internet interaction is deeply unserious, but I made a YouTube comment taking a jab at Trump, and someone responded to me with "Oh, yeah, but Biden's not any better about this, now is he?" smuglord

I said nothing about Biden. The YouTube video had nothing to do with Biden and all about Trump. Funnily enough, I agree with the user's comment because it's correct, but he feels inclined to state it under the assumption that I don't agree with it.

I'm somewhat shocked because I thought that, at this point, especially with Joe Biden being constantly criticized by the left for condoning genocide, people would stop using this tired, old WHATABOUTISM, but I guess YouTube comments have a very fucking low bar for this kind of shit.

Also, this person called Biden left-wing in his comment, so.............................

It's completely impossible to talk to the average voting american about politics because their brains are completely locked in a binary. If you criticize their guy, they will always bring up the other guy in comparison as if that makes it ok for their guy to be so awful. That's why the commentariat on TV and print media is so angry about RFKJr calling him a "spoiler" candidate. They cannot conceive of a third candidate, they can only frame it as if it's a spoiler for their preferred candidate and they will incessantly ask RFKJr "but why are you running, it's hurting Biden".

Liberalism is a nightmare.

I saw a thread on reddit-logo praising the Macklemore Gaza song, in which he explicitly says he won't vote for Biden. Someone wrote a comment like "yeah, I won't vote for Biden either. Genocide is a dealbreaker" or something like that, and the comment had like 50 downvotes and a bunch of nerds going "what, you prefer Trump who will do genocide but on steroids??". Honestly hilarious that they were seemingly fine with the song, but the moment a "normal" had the nerve to repeat the lyrics their lib attack dog mindset kicked in.

Genocide is genocide. There isn't any "more genocide" or "less genocide". When you get to a point that you are saying "if you vote for the other guy, he will just genocide harder" like just log off from life. Sorry I'm not voting for eradicating a whole group of people regardless of which geriatric fuck the Dems like.

Liberals just assume that anything done by an artist with an 'edgy' aesthetic is somehow always going to paint them in a positive light

See also how many of them laugh at conservatives for liking bands such as Rage Against The Machine, but then also love it themselves

[–] nat_turner_overdrive@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago

Edgy artist with left politics? (pink floyd, ratm, macklemore)

smuglord Obviously this is a Democrat because I am a Democrat and a lefty from waaaay back so they must agree with me

porky-scared-flipped whaaaaat?!?! they won't vote for Joe?!?!?!?

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 2 points 6 months ago

More like genocide, but with explosive diarrhea.

[–] PsychedSy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 months ago

I can't fathom why people fail to understand that cynical calculation isn't how people interact with betrayal.

[–] tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 6 months ago

That's why I liked a common chant at some protests in 2020, "Fuck Trump, Fuck Biden too, they don't give a fuck about you". Some conservative observers might have been like "what? I thought all commies were loyal troops of the Biden new world order?"

[–] MusicOwl@hexbear.net 33 points 6 months ago

People are fucking obsessed with binaries badeline-scream

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 31 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Unfortunately, that's been a constant in the US for...forever?

Make a criticism of Al Gore, you must like GW

Criticize Obama? Must love McCain or Romney, depending on the year

Many Americans can only understand politics as something that their two major parties engage in, so any serious criticism of one must indicate tacit support of the other

[–] viva_la_juche@hexbear.net 19 points 6 months ago

I was criticizing democrats to my partner lib dad, and he got more and more heated until he blurted out “but that doesn’t mean you vote for the other guy!” Or something to that effect and I was like “I never said I was voting for Trump?!?!” And he was just like “oh… I thought you meant you were voting for Trump” blocky-wat

[–] roux@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago

I see you've also argued with boomers on Facebook lol.

[–] NewLeaf@hexbear.net 23 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

I wish they could follow the natural conclusion that a criticism of Biden is also a criticism of everything to the right of Biden as well. If I'm anti war, I'm not going to support a different war monger, I'm going to hate everyone who is pro war.

I guess liberals wouldn't be liberals if they had consistency in their beliefs. They also think they have a monopoly on being "left wing" and when you point out that they are more right wing than trump on a couple of issues, suddenly you're a Russian Chinese bot

[–] Sebrof@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Had an older "progressive" lib tell me, in person, that if we don't support Biden then we'll have Genocides all over the world! I didn't know there was an additive property to genocide like that. His argument was effectively "You think one genocide is bad?! Try two (hypothetically)!"

Then told me how Trump would ruin the climate, unlike Biden.

No ability to see past Biden vs Trump

These are deeply unserious people.

[–] Skeleton_Erisma@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Like how me criticizing Israel somehow makes me an antisemite??

Americans love saying "facts don't care about your feelings"

But Americans don't even use facts, it's just vibes based: "whatever fits the narrative at the moment"

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

Well, you are what you eat as they say, and burgericans have been fed vibes narrative their while lives.

Mainstream American political thought is neatly packed into the binary of Democrats and Republicans. nothing else could possibly exist outside of that. Don't think one party is doing a good job? Just vote for the other party!maybe-later-kiddo

There's so many people I talk day to day that think like that. When I say I hate both parties and won't be voting in the presidential election people act like I'm the one that's out of their mind for not wanting to vote for one of the geriatric ghouls being presented as "choices".

[–] davel@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago

The false consciousness of bourgeois electoralism generally and first-past-the-post specifically.

[–] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 13 points 6 months ago

I saw a video of students denouncing genocide in Palestine and a bunch of th comment were like “this is what happens when you let your children watch CNN” lol

[–] Lemvi@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Kinda reminds me of how many people here seem to believe that anti-Putin means pro-US.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"No I don't support the US, I just believe them about all their rivals"

[–] robinnn@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Are we not against Putin in principle despite whatever progressive impact Russia may have internationally?

[–] Misanthropic_Stork@lemmy.ml 8 points 6 months ago

Critical support? On my Hexbear?!

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago

We are (or I am) against Putin with the acknowledgement that Putin is likely a moderating force for Russian ultra-conservative nationalism, he is a liberal after-all. The fact of the matter is that the Russian Communist party has been thoroughly cut off from government and is mostly tailing Putin right now. You can be anti-Putin if you want, but any likely successor will be no more progressive.

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 1 points 6 months ago

I mean ultimately yeah we definitely have criticisms, but the anti Putin libs that come on here never raise them, they just repeat state department propaganda.

Youtube comments is the dumbest place on the planet

[–] stigsbandit34z@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Instagram is a close second

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 9 points 6 months ago

Instagram comments have more bigotry, but YouTube comments have more dumbness. Either way, they both have bigotry and dumbness.

[–] Maoo@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago

This is 97% of people in the US, for sure. American political education is a Red vs. Blue team sport.

[–] Pentacat@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago

I always preface any conversation about US Presidential politics by saying “Biden should be executed for crimes against humanity, but Trump…” It seems to help.
