If you're getting paid, it's not a donation

[–] RemoveEgoDivineFreedom@lemmy.world 48 points 7 months ago (3 children)

You can't convince me we aren't on some sort of prison planet experiment. The most common theme throughout all of human history is suffering. It doesn't matter where, when, or why, there will always be some degenerate ghouls fucking people over. In this case, the demons that set up the system so that the most vulnerable literally need to give their blood to pay rent. It's fucking disgusting.

[–] Darkblue@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago

So... we are in the Bad Place?

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

You are correct.

Prove you deserve better; death or being 50% less miserable.

Well, death either way, but hopefully not yours.

[–] TheAlbatross@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 7 months ago (4 children)

Yo how much does this pay tho?

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 32 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Location dependent. Here in he midwest you can make around 400 something a month doing this 2 times a week.

[–] gentooer@programming.dev 14 points 7 months ago (1 children)

2 times a week?! Over here you aren't allowed to donate plasma more than once every month (and you obviously don't get paid for it)

[–] EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Are you sure you aren't thinking of blood? We have that limitation on blood. But I know most of the rest of the world doesn't get paid. You don't for blood here.

[–] gentooer@programming.dev 3 points 7 months ago

I think blood is 6 weeks, but it's been a while since I donated.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No. "Donating" that often is illegal in civilization because it has proven and sometimes severe negative benefits over a long period. Not even accounting for the risk of death from embolism for $50.

That's why Grifols had to move their operations from Spain to America.

[–] LwL@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago (2 children)

...what? Donating blood is a perfectly common thing in "civilization" including spain. The benefits to the recipients far outweigh the risks to the donator.

[–] AeonFelis@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I think you've missed the "that often". Civilized countries want the donor's body to recover from the donation. "Civilized" countries allow shorter recovery periods because the "donor" needs the money from the "donation" to pay rent.

[–] LwL@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Oh, I read that as "Donating that" where that=blood. Explains a lot, yea. The limit here in germany for blood was very few times per year too. Plasma was allowed a lot more frequently though.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 0 points 7 months ago

You should probably know what people are talking about before you pipe up

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Here in France you can make 0€ because the human body cannot be considered a commodity you can trade

[–] Crack0n7uesday@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

They plasma they take isn't used in hospitals or shit, it's used in labs to make new drugs and shit for profit.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I know but I think that's still not possible here

[–] Crack0n7uesday@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I get that, but if a company is going to use my blood for profit I should see some of that, I shouldn't be expected to pay my rent or feed myself with that, those are much bigger problems. Perhaps the word "donation" is a bit out of place on the ad, but it's the most recognizable term for the action.

[–] Splatterphace@lemm.ee 7 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (4 children)

Don't do it, you can't get rid of the huge needle scars

EDIT: I tried to upload a pic of the scar on my arm, but I keep getting an error 🙄

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 23 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Joke's on you, they'll just get lost in my track marks

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

Are those noodles on your arm?

[–] Hegar@kbin.social 18 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Definitely this. Just get evicted instead - that way you can still wear short sleeves.

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Ready for summer

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 3 points 7 months ago

No, just do crimes instead

No /s

Rob a McMansion

[–] ericbomb@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I mean you totally should do it, a number of people will die without access to the medication it makes.

It sucks that they're in so short supply they have to offer so much money and that people are so poor they need it to survive.

But my little needle scars don't harm me any.

[–] Splatterphace@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I guess I mean don't do it the max amount every week

[–] ericbomb@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I mean we are in permanent undersupply.

So everyone that is willing should do it. If everyone did it once a month we wouldn't need multi week people, but all we can really get is impoverished people doing it a ton.

Welcome to dystopia!

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You're saying "we." Are you involved in plasma collection/donation drives/however I should phrase that?

If so, I'm curious about something. I'm gay, and sexually active. I have protected sex, and I'm on prep. I do have multiple partners, though. Should I donate? Because I've always used the whole gay ban as an excuse not to, because I truly despise needles to a phobia level. But I'd like to help if I can.

[–] ericbomb@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Oh I donated plasma when I could so that's why I use "we". I'm too sick now, but you almost certainly can volunteer at blood drives to help and the like, can even help organize them if you have access to a public space. You should reach out.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago

I’m not the only one! Yeah it’s a rough scar from a rough time in my life.

[–] ChihuahuaOfDoom@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago

In Washington I was making like $200/mo

[–] Balthazar@lemmy.world 22 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Without approving of the American dystopia of paying for plasma donations, can I still say thank you to those that "donate" their plasma so that important medications can be made?

[–] melpomenesclevage@lemm.ee 0 points 7 months ago

Not if its owned by a corporations. They're slaves; they had no choice. Imagine if George Washington thanked the slaves he took his teeth from.

[–] Pohl@lemmy.world 20 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I have received a somewhat unusual vaccination and my antibodies were valuable to a drug company for a while. They were paying 120$ for plasma for a while and you could go 2x a week. The plasma center, like most, wasn’t in the best neighborhood and the cash was doled out be an ATM like machine when you were finished. Well 120 took a hell of a lot more “kachunks” that 15 did and by the time you got your cash there was a whole room full of pissed off desperate folks staring at you. Not that fun.

I have had to sell plasma to make ends meet in my life and I know what those people must have been feeling watching some kid in nice clothes get paid 10x what they were for the same unpleasant procedure. Fucking rough. I used the money to buy a house. They would be lucky to get a groceries out of the deal

[–] MeDuViNoX@sh.itjust.works 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

What kind of house did you buy with an extra 240$ a week?

[–] Pohl@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I mean I was able to save almost 15k during that year which was a suitable down payment on a 100k ish house. which wasn’t hard to find in the city I lived in circa 2005. It wasn’t anything to crow about but it beat renting.

[–] MeDuViNoX@sh.itjust.works 3 points 7 months ago

Sounds good, can't believe it was almost 20 years ago now.

[–] BonesOfTheMoon@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

What was the vaccination for?

[–] lemmylommy@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago

Donate plasma. Impact lives. Get paid.

Haulin‘ ass. Gettin‘ paid.

[–] Ludrol@szmer.info 8 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Why? This is why:
A tweet of ironmouse asking for plasma donations for her Christmas present. underneath is "Do it for her" meme edited with her faces

I wish I could but I can't.

I used to sell plasma to pay for gas for polyamory. Also for job interviews.

Anyways that’s why I’ve got a track mark on one arm despite being allergic to opiates
