Ackchyually humans have 10 fingers, indexed 0 to 9

[–] desentizised@lemm.ee 14 points 9 months ago (2 children)

yea imagine if 0 was worth 1 all of a sudden

[–] Nariom@lemmy.world 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

by that logic finger 2 is worth 2, 3 worth 3 and so on? so you have 45 fingers?!!

I guess we're counting the thumb fingers now. 😜🤪😂

[–] sxan@midwest.social 2 points 9 months ago

Even if we aren't OP is still wrong; we'd have 8 fingers, if we don't count thumbs, even if we index them from 0-7. The only way 9 works is when someone doesn't have the common number of digits.

[–] tias@discuss.tchncs.de 56 points 9 months ago

I mean there are 10 fingers, but numbered 0-9.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 44 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Starting the off-by-1 errors at an early age 😌

[–] idefix@sh.itjust.works 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Is that why he's always pushing the boundaries to test my limits?

[–] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 7 points 9 months ago
// see if the runtime notices
limit := limits[len(limits)]
[–] TenderfootGungi@lemmy.world 35 points 9 months ago (3 children)

We taught our daughter to count starting at zero. Her kindergarten teacher was not amused.

[–] BorgDrone@lemmy.one 18 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Counting starts at one, indexing starts at zero.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 6 points 9 months ago

I didn't want to spoil their fun, but I'm glad you did. That kid's going to experience an embarassing moment of parental disillusionment the first time they try to be clever with a halfway competent math teacher.

Programming joke aside, that is a categorically incorrect way to teach someone how to count.

In respect to the English language asking someone at the bar to pour you zero beers should not yield any passing of drinks.

So for your kins sake, I hope you did not do that.

[–] fibojoly@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

It is the way!

[–] savvywolf@pawb.social 23 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I mean, not everyone has 10 fingers, so the average is slightly less than 10. Coerce to an integer and you get 9.

[–] Deckweiss@lemmy.world 15 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (2 children)

But some people have more than 5 fingers per hand (Polydactyly, afaik the most per hand was 8) so it balances out. /s

[–] SilverCode@lemm.ee 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah but then Pterodactyls bring that number back down again

[–] anzo@programming.dev 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] beeb@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

With 4 fingers tho

[–] PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

On average, a person contains slightly more than one skeleton.

On average, a person has slightly less than two legs.

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 19 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Don't we have 1010 fingers though, 101 on each hand?

[–] bob_lemon@feddit.de 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's just A finger, really

[–] walthervonstolzing@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago

Yeah, I mean all vertebrates are A digit creatures in their front set of limbs.

[–] Trent@lemmy.ml 14 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Have you had your son tested? He may be an AI.

[–] fishbone@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago

Definitely not an AI. An AI would say humans have 9 fingers on each hand, for a total of 47 fingers.

[–] ivanafterall@kbin.social 5 points 9 months ago

First things first: have you counted his fingers, before moving on to anything else?

[–] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 12 points 9 months ago

The index was so out of bounds it fell from his hand

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Eight fingers and two thumbs for ten digits.

[–] 342345@feddit.de 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I just realised that digits translates to Finger in german. And finger also translates to Finger. But you have 10 of the former and 8 of the latter. Funny.

[–] lilly@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 9 months ago

That too yes

[–] BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

It's as if people used their fingers when starting counting things... How weird

[–] Gutek8134@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Me casually using base-12 (Mesopotamian) for counting

[–] 342345@feddit.de 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

You mean used their digits? There are only 8 fingers. But then there is also the octal system. And together with a friend you could count in hexadecimal... :)

[–] Ookami38@sh.itjust.works 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So just for clarification, when was your son born?

[–] MrRazamataz@lemmy.razbot.xyz 9 points 9 months ago

January 1st, 1970

[–] brettvitaz@programming.dev 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Humans have 10 thumbs though...

[–] cupcakezealot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 9 months ago
