At a New Hampshire campaign rally, Donald Trump claimed to have “aced” a recent cognitive test and struggled to pronounce the word “climate,” footage from the event shows.

“I don’t know if you saw, but a few months ago, I took a cognitive test my doctor gave me,” Mr Trump told supporters at the Saturday event.

His comments came just after former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley questioned whether the former president was mentally capable of taking office again after he appeared to repeatedly confuse her with former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a campaign speech on Friday.

Dr Jonathan Reiner, a medical analyst for CNN and professor of medicine and surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, called into question why Mr Trump would need multiple cognitive tests, considering he also took a cognitive test while serving as president.

I'm going to say the same thing I always say about Trump: we don't need anyone to prove anything when we can see the things right in front of our eyes. I watched him crime. I watched him collude. I watched him lie. I heard him admit sexual assault with his own lips. The facts are in front of our eyes. They don't require proof, they are the factual evidence by which to prove other things. Fuck's sake the world is so upside down these days.

The GOP has told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It is their final, most essential command.

Who brags about taking a cognitive test? Does he think that's like an IQ test that proves how smart he is? People are given cognitive tests when there's reason to suspect problems with a person's mental functioning.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 57 points 10 months ago

That's exactly what he thinks. He also just thinks he's extremely smart in general.

Here is the truth: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/12/1705902/-Former-Wharton-Professor-Donald-Trump-Is-the-Dumbest-Goddam-Student-I-Ever-Had

[–] kool_newt@lemm.ee 30 points 10 months ago

He's not bragging to us. The people he's bragging to are even stupider than he is, apparently it's working.

I'm pretty sure if you gave a basic cognitive function test to his audience, only about 35% would pass

[–] SeabassDan@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago (1 children)

He's convincing his followers that have also required cognitive tests that it's a good thing. A great thing, even. And they'll vote accordingly since they can't really pay enough attention to the rest.

[–] Xtallll@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

I'll agree most of his followers probably need cognitive assessment.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

It's all spin. This is him "getting ahead" of recent events before others have a chance to tell the story in the direction you're citing. All because you're right, and they know it's a bad look.

Edit: the technique is also called "Anchoring", and can be used to shape narrative and discussion if you're the first one to open your mouth about something.

[–] pi3r8@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

He is winning at cognitive tests so frequently, he is getting tired of winning.

[–] youngGoku@lemmy.world 56 points 10 months ago (2 children)

He's already a nut job to begin with, it's hard to tell where the cookoo ends and where the senility begins.

[–] maynarkh@feddit.nl 22 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, it would be great if he went from a case study for sociologists to a case study for psychologists.

In plain English, the whole world is dealing with his mental issues, and I think I speak for everyone that we have enough problems even without this dude.

[–] Bigmouse@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

The guy's entire being already is a case study for proctologists

[–] rdyoung@lemmy.world 14 points 10 months ago

The secret is, there is no sanity, it's nut jobs all the way down.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 54 points 10 months ago (5 children)

Plot twist: he only ever had one Cognitive Test, which he failed, but keeps thinking he took last week.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 30 points 10 months ago

But that's the thing that he doesn't understand- it's not a test you can pass or fail any more than reading an eye chart is a test you can pass or fail. It's a diagnostic. He thinks "passing" it means he won the brain race or something.

[–] Denalduh@lemmy.world 24 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The test was fitting the shaped blocks in the corresponding shaped holes, but all shapes fit in the square hole. Aced.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I hear this video. “Oh God…”

[–] zurohki@aussie.zone 10 points 10 months ago

"That's right, it goes in the square hole."

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 10 months ago

I get it! This is why infrastructure week is always two weeks away! He has a plan, but he can't get to release day. It's like a shitty groundhog Day.

He has it tattooed on his chest.

“JOHN G ADMINISTERED A COGNITIVE TEST”

and then in sharpe, beneath it, “aNd YoU dId BiGlY gReAt!”

I hate that you don't have more upvotes.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Give it time, I just made the comment less than an hour ago. 😁

[–] Xtallll@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

Didn't he say the tests keep getting harder?

[–] Diplomjodler@feddit.de 50 points 10 months ago (2 children)

His idiocy and metal decline have been on full display for almost a decade now. And yet this person has a real shot at winning the presidency again. That is one fucked up political system they have there in the US of A.

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago

His idiocy has been on full display for WAY longer than a decade.

[–] GhostsAreShitty@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

Living here and having to watch it happen in real time is terrifying. It was an easy way to know which of my friends and family are not okay.

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 31 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I remember hearing him say "oranges" instead of "origins", realising he said the wrong thing and then repeating "oranges" again.

[–] dharwin@kbin.social 7 points 10 months ago

In his mind, he is never wrong, it is not possible. Just more proof that he is dumber than a sack of toenails.

It's pretty common with dementia that older memories are recalled more strongly and as if they happened more recently than they actually did.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

In their post on cognitive testing, the Cleveland Clinic also states, “a good score doesn’t necessarily mean there’s no brain impairment.”

Slip-ups like these could continue to undercut the 77-year-old former President’s argument that Mr Biden — just four years his senior — is cognitively unfit for office.
