I designed this for my son, I figured he'd like feeling the letters and it'd help him learn them.

Came out exactly like I hoped, though I'll admit it isn't exactly his favorite toy.

Honestly it might be more fun with some color! Or a way to have it be interactive - like press the letters and have it say the letter, or something like that.

A future version with print in place springy buttons for each letter would probably work out well! I agree something more interactive and colorful would help keep his attention.

print out colorful inserts to slot the letters into. like the shape-in-the-hole toys

Yeah, exactly this.

You could also make it more colourful safely for the moment by filling the letters with different colours of play-doh.

Could happen, but it hasn't been an issue yet. Something I will consider in future designs.
