For me, the real magic of Reddit was in hyperspecific niche communities full of hobbyist experts -- or even professionals. Places like r/tolkienfans.

/r/curvy . I mean, uh, /r/gardening. Yeah that one..

I would love to see something like r/AskHistorians. It's my favorite sub by far, and something I have really seen anywhere else. It's heavily moderated (in a good way), and the answers are all high quality and sourced. It's pretty much why I held on to my reddit account as long as I have.

Might not be the most popular option but a shitposting sub along the lines of 196/197/19684 is the major one for me. Would also love to see a 3dprinting community, but I kinda think something along the lines of technical hobbies/niches are a best case scenario for new services joining the fediverse.

I'd love to see communities about:

• crafting (fibre crafts like knitting and spinning in particular)
• classical music
• photography
• Latin
• history (r/askhistorians?)
• cats
• art
• cooking
• writing
• Star Trek
• menopause
• AuDHD
• birdwatching
• gardening
• reading

There was a time when /r/youtubehaiku was one of my most visited subs. It would be great to see more short weird videos that give you a little chuckle.

I can't seem to find a movies one, best part of Reddit was looking up discussions of the recently released movies

Also wanted to add that a comics equivalent would be nice if there isn't one already. I doubt many of the longtime artists would migrate fully, but it would at least be another platform that could get them greater reach.

Videos/mealtimevideos was a big thing for me. They kept me entertained while I ate lunch, lol.

"Indie Products"- a place for people to nerd out about stuff made by small independent makers and for indie makers to find support maybe? I'm not a maker myself but I really enjoy buying from small businesses and finding out about cool products.

I saw it sort of mentioned, but I think niche shitposting communities like the various okbuddy subs.

Looks like no one's mentioned it... I'd like a British community. Maybe for discussing news in our corner of the world, maybe just for casual talk like /r/CasualUK.

I want equivalents for:

• r/Fantasy
• r/tipofmytongue (iirc that name - the one for helping people find shit they've forgotten)
• maybe r/52books (it produces too many simple posts to just go in r/books, not sure if the same would be true here)
• r/vegetarian

Edit: r/fantasy is the biggest one for me. In effect the subreddit is really more for SciFi and Fantasy, both - and other speculative fiction - and they have a yearly speculative fiction bingo card that's really fun to participate in. It's mostly books in practice but is not exclusively about books.

The only community I really miss is r/todayilearned. Just some quick, interesting facts. Having an alternative here would be fantastic.

I am a Dark Souls addict and when I quit Reddit for good on July 1st, those are the subs I'll really miss most. I'm also a history teacher and adjunct and really will suffer without /r/AskHistorians.

I'd love to see more communities that cover topics outside of the usual STEM / STEM-adjacent / typical redditor interests. I was on another reddit-alternative a few years ago called tildes and it was ... shockingly like a microcosm of reddit. Like, it's hard to describe how narrowly-focused, how stereotypically reddit, the userbase's interests are. STEM, anime, gaming.

The music, literature, humanities, environment, city life and so on communities are excellent starts in that direction. And, despite the fact I'll never read anything there, the sports community is equally valuable for the same reason.

That said, something for tabletop games would be cool, too. Preferably something not D&D/MtG because we all know they completely take over every space they touch (like my FLGS... RIP).

Whatever hyper-specific place lets me rant about how everyone misuses PDFs. ...And a BattleTech sub.

Heck, just generally, I wish Lemmy was more like... spin up a server and you've basically got a subreddit. Rather than having these big mostly-isolated attempts at being everything.

I miss r/actuallesbians, r/MTF, and some obscure gaming communties like r/titanfall, r/Metroid and r/Earthbound.

Oh and the brainrot known as r/okbuddychicanery and r/anarchychess.

Mystery, true crime, or r/RBI type content would be all it takes to solidify my place here. Many of those communities across the web lean into their toxicity, so I’m crossing my fingers for a sane place to engage in discussion and participate in deep dives.

Even more specifically, subs like r/whatisthisthing or r/toyid are fun for people who enjoy some light sleuthing. Anyone know if there’s a Lemmy equivalent or adjacent to any of these?

Something akin to /r/CharacterRant with interesting critique and analysis of media. Most of the same rules would apply and as long as people don't get into flame wars it would be a great fit for Beehaw. It would require a good bit of moderation, though.
