The vapidity of youth culture notwithstanding, it’s something that should have been understood and embraced by the late USSR, along with funding for pop culture arts and a progressive/harm minimisation legalisation of drug use, it could’ve re-energised the youth in favour of socialism rather than seeing it as decrepit, boring and repressive and been a big propaganda win against the West
The USSR fell because of a neoliberal coup, not because the youth wanted to listen to rock music. The dissolution was voted against in the referendum, there were riots on the streets and the supreme soviet was fucking bombed.
