Captain America: Brave New World is coming out in 2024 (next year), and the MCU is introducing the character, Sabra. In case you didn't click the link, Sabra is an Israeli superhero that basically wears the Israel flag as her costume.

This conflict could delay the movie since marvel likes calling their Captain America movies "political thrillers". I am so mad why would Hamas do this. Now, Marvel has to restructure their film so that it's not outdated. Sadly, the budget is going to go through the roof now since they have to add like an hour-and-a-half of CGI of Captain Israel going 9/11 on buildings and hospitals in Gaza.

I just want the fighting to end so we can go back to how things were before, capekino paradise.

in the comics, she is a member of the Mossad, and many of the Arab characters she interacts with are portrayed as misogynistic, antisemitic and violent

"She was raised on a special kibbutz run by the Israeli government after her power manifested. Ruth was the first superhuman agent to serve with the Mossad (the Israeli secret service). She became a police officer in addition to serving as a government agent."

In late 2024 the woman f-15 eagle pilot with the most hospital kills in the IDF is going to be nicknamed Sabra and all the little girls are going to look up to her

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Uhhh somehow this reminded me of some old US propaganda...

what was the name of the woman the US used for propaganda in the iraq war a billion years ago?

Remember the one where they made a story about how she was a war hero and she was held prisoner in a hospital so we 'rescued' her in an operation but it turned out she was just being treated for her injuries? you remember her name? Im gonna see if i can dig that up (even tho it's not super relevant)

In the current season of the Simpsons Lisa would say the same thing but the writers would agree with her

Ruth was the first superhuman agent to serve with the Mossad (the Israeli secret service)

Now this is diversity

Super soldier turned super cop for apartheid state

What issue has the part where she laments not being able to fight in the Boer wars?

[–] GottiGoFast@hexbear.net 50 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Forgot to add this in, but for like a year the title was actually "Captain America: New World Order"

Funniest shit, it was speculated they changed the title because of...antisemitic connotations ![agony](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/7bdbc255-05e5-4922-92d9-59cdc7686f1a.png "emoji agony")

[–] StellarTabi@hexbear.net 22 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I understand how Brave New World will be perceived as functionally less anti-Semitic, but do either of these titles (New World Order) even make sense as references to the MCU? I might have only watched 1 or 2 old MCU movie in the last 5 years.

[–] StellarTabi@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I only remember 2 things, first is that grimdark Grimace snaps his fingers and everybody becomes sand, also the one where they (hopefully unintentionally) rehabilitated nazis by saying "no actually the bad stuff was hydra and some guy who rips his face off for no reason".

[–] Saeculum@hexbear.net 12 points 1 year ago

I don't think they ever suggest in the movies that Hydra were the driving force behind the Nazi's atrocities.

If anything, the Hydra plot in later films outright states that the US government had been run not just by fascists, but by actual Nazis since at least the end of WWII.

It's worse, actually she's named after a massacre of Palestinians which the hummus is also named after

[–] newmou@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Jfc

"Sabra and Shatila are the names of two Palestinian camps in Lebanon where, from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18 in 1982, a Lebanese Christian militia massacred hundreds of residents. Israeli troops had allowed the militia to enter the camps, and Israeli commanders issued no orders to stop the carnage."

[–] JuryNullification@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, named after grainy ass supermarket hummus.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 14 points 1 year ago

Hummus should be like twinks, smooth and will fuck your ass up

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Imagine naming your superhero after a brand of hummus

[–] Orannis62@hexbear.net 38 points 1 year ago

It's worse, she (and the hummus company) is essentially named Settler

WTF is that power? MIC fingers?

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 23 points 1 year ago

It's called Hospital Strike.

[–] uralsolo@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

her superpower is shooting missiles at children

Maybe we're looking at this all wrong, and she's supposed to be completely over-the-top.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 29 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Ah crap is that hummus ive been buying made by an Israeli company?

[–] GottiGoFast@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

"Until 2010, the Strauss Group (bought Sabra in 2005) stated on their English-language website that the company donated food packages to the Golani Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces."

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oof I'm just stealing it from now on

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

If you have a blender it's super easy to make your own from canned chickpeas. Just add a bit of salt, cumin, tahini, and lemon juice, and then any other herbs, spices, or foodstuffs you fancy. I'm a fan of allspice, chilli flakes, and a splash of worcestershire sauce.

Edit: also if you can find Kala chana (black chickpeas) I personally think they make much tastier hummus than regular chickpeas. Might have to look in world foods type places to find them though.

Also I just want to say all this marvel shit is so low effort in terms of writing. How hard is it to come up with original stories and characters without scraping the sides of the comic book churn?

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 48 points 1 year ago (1 children)

defunding humanities education for all but the idle rich, an extreme statistical minority, has an affect on cultural output.

[–] UlyssesT@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

Sounds like a plotline that'd fit nicely with a different superhero. homelander

[–] Pluto@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

They want to be serious with the title but, like, not serious in the actual movie.

[–] GeorgeZBush@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

God this movie might be a new level of lib nerd redditor cringe, which I didn't even think was possible at this late stage of the MCU. Imagine a scene with Sabra spouting epic Whedonisms while beating the shit out of Durka Durka Jihad caricatures.

[–] Tachanka@hexbear.net 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Sabra

they named this mf after the genocider hummus smh

[–] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

Sabra was the location of an infamous massacre carried out with the aid of the IDF I would not put it past an Israeli hummus brand to name itself after it as a dog whistle.
