Am I taking crazy pills? Last I heard hexbear doesn't even exist anymore.

Are yall so laser focused on feudposting you missed that piece of news?

It's wild how much a game of telephone happens even within what you'd expect to be the closest circle of association

Hexbear exists, the domain is changing names and federation is broken for now but posting is still happening on chapo.chat.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 9 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I had to check but hexbear currently redirects to chapo.chat so I assume they have the domain for now.

Which says a lot about the manufactured outrage. Nobody even has a clue what is going on over at hexbear, but somehow their Lemmy experience is ruined by it.

This whole instance-tribalism seems very self-defeating to me. Why be decentralised if everyone ends up so boxed off that there are just a handful of isolated instance-clusters talking amongst themselves? It's like how email (SMTP) is decentralised but the mega-hosts act like a cabal, gatekeeping so strongly (and virtually doing blocklist-by-default for unrecognised servers - even of good standing) ultimately capturing the user-base by undermining the decentralisation. Luckily with DKIM/SPF/DMARC/ARC/etc and stronger anti-trust regulations email seems to be slowly climbing back out of that hole. Unfortunately with all the banal tribalism it feels like much of the new Activitypub based tech users are willfully climbing into that same hole, without even being corralled there by mega-hosts.

I'm pretty sure if we're excluding instances with troll farms or hosting illegal material, the map of Lemmy instances is still kind of a single amorphous blob, with nearly all connected instances being just 1 connection away from their blocked instances. These can't be defined as isolated instance-clusters. Lemmy.world users seem to always know what hexbear users are up to because of their federated neighbors, lol.

Nah, they think they know what hexbear users are up to because random folk make shit up and nobody calls them on it, because they're defederated.

I see you also know about PugJesus.

PJ is kind of interesting, in that being anti-communist is a massive part of their reason to be on the fediverse, as a mod for 2 anti-communist communities and a prolific anti-communist poster. They denounce the Black Panther Party for being "violent" and supporting AES, but will uphold the Nazi-aligned Hungarian revolt, where Jewish people and Communists had their doors marked and were being lynched, as an example of "real revolution against the Soviets."

I once left a reasonable and non-hostile response to a post on tankiejerk and they removed it and permabanned me for being "tankie," lol.

Regardless of whether you're politically left or right, I feel like the hexbear crowd is just tremendously unfriendly. Even when I agree with them, I usually feel bad reading what they have to say. Being unwelcoming is not a good strategy for proliferating one's politics.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago

Depends, if you're a Communist or an Anarchist and aren't being sectarian (except against, like, Gonzaloists that support Gonzalo and defend Pol Pot), it's very friendly. By not allowing liberalism, it ends up stopping endless arguments between leftists and liberals before they can even start.

Tankies shit my pants.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 17 points 6 days ago (6 children)

I've seen "hexbear" but have no idea what it is, so clearly it's not ruining anything for me.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago

It's a Communist/Anarchist instance, Lemmy.world defederated from it before they had a chance to federate.
