News and information from Europe πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

I wouldn't mind, but it is pretty funny when you consider that California's GDP alone is ten times that of Denmark's.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemm.ee 13 points 11 hours ago

If they somehow actually take California, can the two states above it join so I can get that sweet GDPR?

California inside EU through Denmark which means California inside Schengen area? Sounds like new easy to access location for holidays :P.

Wait does that also means that Hollywood movies will become EU movies? Wait does that also means that Porn Valley movies will become EU movies?

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

That also means you can only visit all of the EU and California for 3 months per year.

Schengen destroyed holidays in the EU because you can't hop from country to country and get new visas anymore

[–] erin@social.sidh.bzh 2 points 7 hours ago

You don't need a visa to travel inside the Schengen area and you can travel freely inside UE.

[–] meldrik@lemmy.wtf 3 points 10 hours ago

My mind is blown!

[–] lud@lemm.ee 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That depends. Overseas territories aren't always part of the Schengen.

Also isn't money the main obstacle to going to California for EU citizens? I can't imagine it would be that hard to get a visa right now.

[–] erin@social.sidh.bzh 2 points 11 hours ago

oh shit, I just searched and yes, french overseas territories are not part of the schengen area. Which is strange because it means that 3/4 of France territory is not inside the Schengen area 🀣

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 46 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Hey Californians, this is your chance to get out.

[–] ByteJunk@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

In response to President Donald Trump’s continued musing about the U.S. acquiring Greenland from Denmark...

I love how the article uses the word musing instead of, oh I don't know, raving lunacy? Rambling idiocy?

How whimsical of them...

[–] errer@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

Trade California for Greenland Trump. Do it. It’s such a huge deal and you love deals!

[–] octopus_ink@lemmy.ml 19 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Careful, if Trump thinks he will personally benefit in some way...

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 38 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Then Californians are free

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

[–] solsangraal@lemmy.zip 14 points 15 hours ago

[–] azolus@slrpnk.net 15 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Why would we want those backwater hellscapes?

[–] jagged_circle@feddit.nl 2 points 7 hours ago

Beaches. The nature is nice. Its just half the people that suck.

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com -1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Be carful of that fault line and wild fires.

Maybe we would actually start listening to the remaining native Americans on how to actually tend the garden that they spent 15,000+ years tending.
