Summary

Donald Trump suggested using "economic force" to acquire Canada, citing trade deficits and national security benefits.

He also claimed the U.S. "subsidizes" Canada by up to $200 billion annually.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed the idea, saying, "there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell" Canada would join the U.S.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden praised Trudeau’s leadership as he prepares to leave office amidst rising U.S.-Canada trade tensions and tariff threats under Trump.

How can people actually not laugh in his face??

[–] socialmedia@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Just think about the fact that this man dodged the draft and everyone knows it.

He has never served a day in his life. It used to be pretty much a requirement that a realistic presidential candidate was ex-military.

This shit is bonkers. None of this guys children are at any risk if he goes to war with Denmark, Mexico, and Canada.

Not that he really wants Greenland, or Canada. Its a distraction once again to steer the talking points away from whatever Russia and China are doing, or whatever climate catastrophe they're working on.

Finally, this is only news to people reading left leaning sites. Fox news would gloss over this shit or give it 30 seconds of praise. By the time we get properly agitated about something, his fans have forgotten it ever happened.

People keep saying "How is this not the last straw for people".. He was reelected by people who don't know about these things or don't care.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 3 points 8 hours ago

Incoming: Fox Panel where three fake blond women talk about how they have been to Panama, Greenland and Canada and the people there were really rude and hate Americans even though every school there looked like it was built by America and the guy at the hotel reception said he is so sorry he loves America and please have America come and take it because they really suffer and America is the greatest.

[–] IamAnonymous@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

I’m sure Fox News is saying this is just a smart business move to get the other party to compromise by threatening them and not actually enforcing this tariff.

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 1 points 17 hours ago

He was reelected for different reasons that his absurd theories and comments about foreign affairs

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because he has real political power.

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Very limited, compared to his predecessors. Plus, he's got a lot less money to invest/spend. Not my problem (I'm not a US citizen nor I live in the US) but his voters too should be able to separate his fuckery from his actual political actions (whatever they will be)

[–] thefartographer@lemm.ee 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Plus, he's got a lot less money to invest/spend

The richest man in the world is backing him and is part of his government. There's no bottom to his access to wealth. Entire militaries and governments are beholden to Melon...

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 2 points 17 hours ago

A lot of rich men are behind the other leaders, and their business are not space and cars...

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

How is it more limited when his party also controls the house, senate, and Supreme Court?

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Limited in the world, it's not the 80s anymore, not even the 90s or the 00s...back then a US President was the closer thing humanity had to a world leader

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 2 points 16 hours ago

In that sense you are probably right, but I would say he has more power to make bad decisions that can still seriously fuck shit up abroad than any president from those decades too.

[–] Cryan24@lemmy.world 51 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Doesn't seem wise, the US depended on Canada for 60% of its crude oil last year..

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

they will need some freedom, you say?

[–] vanderbilt@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Now you see why he’s trying to normalize the idea of annexation. Greenland has potential to be resource rich and Canada is resource rich.

I predict the next world war will happen on the cusp of smaller nations creating nuclear arsenals to defend their sovereignty.

[–] Wiz@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

By "resource rich" I assume you mean "One of the few habitable places on earth in 20 years."

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Most of Canada isn't even habitable for weird Canadians. I live close to Maine, and there are some times of the year where you arne't leaving home for a day or two until the snowplows dig everyone out. and our winters are MILD

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah. But Canada was dumb enough to build pipelines into America instead of their own refineries or shipping, so they're kind of stuck.

And Trudeau is resigning and while I don't know much about his likely replacement...

He doesn't seem great

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Pipelines can be shut off. It's a Putin-approved tactic.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And then Canada sells this unprocessed oil to…who exactly? Gotta get it to a coast if you can’t pipe it through the US and Canada is yuge

[–] palordrolap@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oil doesn't go off if you store it properly. Or don't extract it in the first place. The fact it has been in the ground for millions of years is testament to that.

And, there's that whole Putin thing I alluded to. Europe might well be interested in surplus oil.

Yeah, we should be using renewables, not fossil fuels, but a lot of the old infrastructure is still here. There's bound to be some interest.

I do feel for the oil workers who might be affected by all this, though, which might be what you're getting at.

[–] Saleh@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Oil (EDIT: in the ground) is stored under a lot of pressure, oil wells cannot be shut off and restarted easily, some might never start again when being shut off, building refineries and pipelines takes years and storing large swaths of crude above ground is incredibly inefficient.

In the end you need a good processing and logistics to get the stuff on the market constantly.

[–] Zahtu@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

Why cant Canada introduce legislation to Stop providing cruse oil through those Pipeline? Starting from Trumps Inauguration or at least from the start of the next contract renewal. Would be one hell of a Inauguration present

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That’s probably one reason he’d like to annex it then. All that crude would be ours.

[–] Cryan24@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Or they cut you off and you dont have the oil to mobilise your army against them..

[–] Magister@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

And aluminium, and wood

[–] Magister@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Doesn't he know Canada is basically a british colony? We have the King on all our coins/bills, if he wants to invade Canada, I think UK will say something about it. And if Canada separates, I'd rather join France than USA. Also we can burn the white house like in 1812.

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Canada isn't a British colony anymore. Canada has its own king, who is also king of the UK, and also of Australia, and also of New Zealand.

[–] DicJacobus@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

Officially removed the last strings of being a colony in 1982. the head of state with the monarchy was kept as a tradition for the oldies.

Now more accurate to say Commonwealth member, Ally of many, and founding member of NATO.

[–] LemmyTryThisAgain@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago

Brave of you to assume he knows anything about Canada at all

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Doesn't he know Canada is basically a british colony?

🤣 No. He just learned where Canada is and doesn't like it being over America. "We should be in top".

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Turnip will soon present a new map where the US is "on top", and state that this is the new official map of the world.

Something like this

[–] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 17 hours ago

The gold is a nice touch.

[–] realitista@lemm.ee 1 points 21 hours ago

You should totally burn the White House. Reminder time.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@sh.itjust.works 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The guy continues spewing bullshit and threatening every country in the world; if he keeps going, I won't be surprised if he ends up in an "accident" in which no secret services agency was involved at all.

[–] kn0wmad1c@programming.dev 10 points 1 day ago

Because he can remain president indefinitely if America is at war.

[–] thejml@lemm.ee 14 points 1 day ago

Defenestration has yet to catch on here, but with his Russian ties, it’s practically a family tradition.

[–] RedIce25@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

First Greenland then Canada, is the US becoming an imperialist dictatorship?

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 40 points 1 day ago

Becoming... lol we just skip the literal occupation with citizens and overt claiming part of it. We deliver "freedom" and install puppets where we deem necessary and have done so for practically forever.

Blowback is a pretty good podcast that goes in depth into a couple of major examples in our history of "intervention."

[–] skvlp@lemm.ee 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trying to make sure that his legacy will be "hardballing the US into oblivion".

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He is making sure every American product is boycotted.

[–] Cryan24@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

A true champion of US isolationism!

[–] jdnewmil@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

His admiration for "strong' leaders (dictators) starts to take shape. Supplying weapons to Ukraine to fight military aggression doesn't seem appropriate when you can simply try to outdo Putin at his own game.

Julius Caesar did this... it is not a new pattern.

[–] Soulifix@kbin.melroy.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Trump is literally George Bush's third term on crack, by doing this.

[–] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

That's unfair to crackheads.
