Interesting, I'm here from /all. What exactly is Organic Maps, and what's its connection to OpenStreet Maps?
Organic Maps (Unofficial)
Organic Maps is a free Android & iOS offline maps app for travelers, tourists, hikers, and cyclists based on top of crowd-sourced OpenStreetMap data and curated with love by MapsWithMe (Maps.Me) founders.
Download Organic Maps from:
Organic Maps is open source, beautiful and private. The app uses map data from Openstreetmap.
Ah right. So it's like a front-end alternative UI to OSM, basically?
Yeah, and very good one especially when it comes to cycling and walking routes - including forest trails, but I'm also using it for navigation when driving. Damn solid piece of software
Exactly, yes. One key difference in android v/s OSMand is that organic maps' route calculation is way faster.
Holy shit, just had a look at their Google Play entry and I fucking love how highly responsive they are to their users. Definitely gonna download it and give it a go.
Sunshine, consider yourself one user closer to overtaking Reddit xD
Your welcome <3, I'm glad you're impressed with the team, those folks work hard!
Hi! Also a long time user of OSMand+ I'm going to have a look, but I have some questions for the community
- Does this app work as well for all parts of the world? I'm in Europe
- I have a subscription to OSM (just to support them). Would that be lost if I use this app?
Thanks for all the answers. Final question, just out of curiosity: Why are two apps developed? Why not simply make the osm app better?;
Osm does not have an app as it is a database that third party apps use.
Who developed the OSMand+ app then?
Oh I thought you were talking the osm database.
Does this app work as well for all parts of the world? I’m in Europe
Yes, it covers all the regions and Europe's has the most detailed maps in openstreetmap especially Germany.
I have a subscription to OSM (just to support them). Would that be lost if I use this app?
No, as it uses the same openstreetmaps database to power the app. So you can continue to donate.
From Europe: Works perfectly for me (and why wouldn't it, it's just OSM)
I'm doing my part!
You have the right to a good user experience and privacy!
It ain't Google maps ready but for any FOSS enthusiast it is the proper choice esp once you install TTS service
It works
Bike route directions are way better than gmaps, in my area the main thing is the shops shown not being up to date
You could be the one to add the shops as the built in editor is great for adding details.
Allegedly you can get a tool and update them yourself
OSM something its an app on fdriod
I can edit the map, and I do often, but I haven't gotten around to updating the shops yet.
I have been contributing to the osm database a lot recently so that is quickly changing.

I use OrganicMaps for viewing my own collection of my daily GPS coordinates, it's pretty handy for recalling where you were / when and not having to sell out to Google Location History to do so.
Sounds good
How does it compare to Magic Earth?
I use them for different purposes. Magic Earth for when I drive since it includes in real time traffic data, Organic Maps for everything else.
Having third-party apps are great as it encourages the most competition for user interface design and features.
