Grandma (she RSVP'd to bring her pumpkin pie but then died of cancer instead).

Sorry to hear...
Thanks. One of my cousins brought a store-bought pumpkin pie instead, but it wasn't the same.
Joking aside, she was 90 and had a major health scare last year so had already made her peace with everyone. She was diagnosed w/ Stage 4 liver cancer a couple months ago and given 4-6 months, even with treatment. Decided to just go to sleep instead. Sad, but she was mentally in control up until the end and it was better to go out now than spend another 4 months dying of cancer for no reason.
A couple years ago I ruined my friends thanksgiving by smoking her up some of that seasons finest fresh greens…
I did that one year. Then tried to redeem myself with Christmas dinner but accidentally did the same thing. ETA-Edibles can be sneaky
Oh! That reminds me of another thanksgiving, involving my ex, a good friend down on their luck, my landlord and his family who lived upstairs and were throwing a party with their friends (I’ve lived in the same place for almost a decade, we’ve become good friends over the years) that we came up and visited for a bit.
Anyway:
That year, I learned how to infuse sugar with weed (happy to DM you how it’s so simple it’s stupid). I decided to make homemade BBQ sauce with said infused sugar. Vegetarian. Cooked homemade Mac and cheese which is then baked in a casserole, and decided to try to incorporate BBQ pulled jackfruit (think pulled pork) into the Mac and cheese casserole.
Ex, myself, good friend down on their luck are all stoners. We enjoy the Mac and cheese together in my kitchen, leaving about half of the casserole for leftovers. I think my landlord came down for a couple bites of it too. I also baked infused brownies and we headed upstairs with them.
The Mac and cheese hit us all at once. Omfg we were so high. We’re all in the hallway of my landlords place and we just burst out laughing so hard we’re crying. This shit is goooood.
Party guests who consumed the brownies talked about it for years after. Apparently those were good too - I don’t even think I had one because I was more than high enough from dinner.
Cool thing about weed infused sugar: you can make cocktails with it. Highly recommend a mojito 😆
No one this year but 2 years ago my sister was in a manic phase and cornered my mother in law for 45 minutes just...talking about STUFF. Eventually all other conversation stopped to hear about water and crystals and 'energy'. When I broke in and asked her to give it a break she stormed out of the house and drove off leaving her husband and kids there. She came back an hour later with an ice cream cone because she knew we would eat dessert without her. We hadn't but there was lots of forced laughter all around.
Wow
Yeah, they stayed home last year but this year she came and was within the realm of normal or at least no stranger than anyone else. I believe that she is in therapy and/or medicated. This year was awkward not because anything happened but because everyone was aware something COULD happen.
Yeah we all go through stuff occasionally, I hope she's okay.:-)
Nobody!
My sister kinda tried, but failed lol.
After our grandmother died, the big family Thanksgiving went bye bye. No more giant mass of cousins all in one place.
Pretty much every branch of my grandparents kids, and my grandparents siblings' families that were close enough to come, all started their own thing.
It just so happens that my mom and dad only had two kids that lived. Since our first cousins do their thing at weird times, we don't go there. Plus, their mom, my aunt, has turned into a bit of a cunt, and not the good kind.
Which is fine, because my best friend and his husband are fucking great They're family, period. They also have a big ol house, and they work their asses off. So they decided, after my grandmother died and I was expressing the loss of that big family get together, and the closeness I thought was there, to start hosting.
The first year they did it, me, my wife & kid, my dad, my sister and her kid were all there. My mom is a party pooper, and just didn't want to go. Seriously, that's how she's always been, and she says that with her parents gone, she doesn't owe anyone anything in the way of family gatherings.
So, that first year, my bros tell my sister it's a thing, and will be until they're too old to make it happen. We pick a specific date each year though, so that it's on a weekend.
The next year, the same. Then the next year.
Well, this year, my sister decides to wait until two days before the date to ask about it. She's told, as always, of course it's on, drag your ass over there.
For whatever reason, she decided this year, despite the established new tradition and the multiple conversations about it, that she didn't get invited in time to take off from work.
And threw a minor hissy fit about it. I told her to suck the corn out of my holiday poo, she knew the date, she knew she was not only welcome, but that it was a standing invitation to the party/dinner. She didn't even need to confirm or bring anything because there's always too much food.
So she didn't show, but oh well lol
We packed them up enough containers to feed all of them twice and dropped it off.
Fun was had, bellies were filled, the itis washed over the house like a giant, gut rumbling wave of sleep gas.
Same as every other year. Auntie wanted to cook the turkey well done. We had to once again remind her firmly we are a MEDIUM RARE TURKEY FAMILY.
I guess I did because I refuse to speak with my trumper father any longer. So my family did our own Friendsgiving.
I'm not sure whether to say congratulations or I'm sorry (for circumstances leading up to that), I guess bc both are true at the same time. Either way it's rough, but also awesome that you have friends to hang with then:-).
