Summary

Iran’s new “chastity and hijab” laws impose severe penalties, including the death penalty, for women who defy mandatory veiling or engage in related activism.

Repeat offenders face up to 15 years in prison or heavy fines, while those deemed to commit “corruption on Earth” by sharing protests abroad could be executed.

Amnesty International and activists have condemned the law, citing intensified repression and risks to women’s rights.

The legislation follows protests after Mahsa Amini’s death in 2022, with critics warning it further entrenches Iran’s authoritarian crackdown on dissent and gender equality.

The US really set the Iranian people up for failure by playing a key role in the 1953 coup that overthrew Mohammad Mosaddeq. Just imagine how different things there would be today. But nope, CIA had to fuck around and heavily contribute to screwing over an entire population for generations.

Edit: I shouldn't have forgotten Britain's SIS role, either. It was their oil industry that Mohammad was campaigning to nationalize, after all.

The US has fucked up so many governments, and yet people still believe they are all about "freedom" and are a force of good in the world.

I don't think anyone believes that anymore besides the MAGA cultists.

Plenty of Americans STILL think their crumbs of democracy will save them from their own government.

You'd be surprised how positively USA is viewed around the world. The influence of US media cannot be underestimated.

Nothing says, "moral" quite like murdering people for what clothing they wear.

I hope this backfires on the government

I’ve met many excellent Iranian people who were incredibly smart and fun to be around. They had left and come to Canada or the US for work and built a life here.

It’s a tragedy how their government treats women.

A glimpse of the future in the US when the Y'all Qaida gets to dominate.

As someone who grew up Muslim, this goes against some very basic pillars of islam. This country, and all "religious" governments in fact, never actually follow the religion they use to control their people. It's corruption to the root. If those religions were real (me being a god has the same Probability) then they're all burning in hell forever without redemption. Not what I would've done as a god, but I'm not an asshole.

Who exactly is the "they" you are referring too?

Here's the BBC from last year.

Here's Amnesty International in September.

Here's the AP News in March of 2022.
