per Decision Desk, it looks like trump won. I'm starting to see a few outlets like NBC call Pennsylvania for trump, too.

as a trans woman, i'm fucking terrified.

yeah, if you voted for trump this election, after everything over the last ~9 years, you're fucking evil. straight up evil. lots of people, worldwide, are going to suffer because of this as the world falls deeper under the influence of fascism. take care of yourself, take care of your loved ones, form communities, and be prepared to fight for your lives. we're going to need each other if we're going to to make it through this

You don't have to be trans to be fucking terrified. Trump somehow always underperforms in the polls, but we've now seen what this country truly is, and I want none of this. Already working on possible alternatives.

[–] blindsight@beehaw.org 45 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm a cis Canadian and I'm terrified for everyone in the US. Even the ignorant masses who viewed for him. Project 2025 is going to dismantle American democracy, and with a stuffed supreme court, there are no remaining impediments to reverse this for a generation, until it's too entrenched to change. If the USA lasts that long.

Literally wondering if an American civil war, or breaking apart into smaller countries, will be coming.

Longer term, terrified what this will mean for anthropogenic climate change and the world my children will inherit. (A climate-science denier is going to be the PM of Canada this time next year, too, and many are already provincial premiers.)

I didn't think this was possible, tbh. I don't understand how 51% of Americans can think the "grab-her-by-the-pussy" con artist is the best choice for president. He's literally told them, repeatedly, what he's going to do and they don't care, don't pay attention, or don't believe him. I can't even.

I'm going to go bury my head in the sand. No more news for me for the next long while. This isn't good for my health.

[–] ElJefe@lemm.ee 26 points 1 week ago

As a fellow Canadian resident… this is brutal man. I can’t believe people would vote this fuck in again. Like, how can you look at his first four years as the most incompetent president in the history of the us and say “ya I’ll have some more of that?”

What’s also terrifying is the repercussions this will have on our country and our brothers and sisters down south of the American cesspool. Un-fucking-believable. Good job you guys.

[–] Vodulas@beehaw.org 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don’t understand how 51% of Americans can think the “grab-her-by-the-pussy” con artist is the best choice for president.

They don't, but due to a combination of voter disenfranchisement and apathy, voter turnout is usually around 50%-60% max. 2020 was a very large turnout at 66.8%. So 51% of 60% think he is. Still too many, but if we had a way to get every eligible voter a ballot, it would likely be different

[–] tardigrada@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Just a question: Where can you see the voter turn out rate in this and possibly past elections? I can't find that.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Past elections are on Wikipedia. And this one will take a while to pull the numbers together, but it'll be added in the coming months.

[–] Vodulas@beehaw.org 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Ballotopedia has past years, but I haven't seen any info for this year yet.

https://ballotpedia.org/Election_results,_2024:_Analysis_of_voter_turnout_in_the_2024_general_election

I've heard rumors of low turnout, but I suspect it is around 60% based on previous years.

Edit: WaPo says 65% this year. Can't find anyone else reporting on it.

America is broken and I dont know if it can be repaired.

[–] Vodulas@beehaw.org 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It can't anymore. Project 2025 will happen, and the guardrails have been removed. Welcome to totalitarianism

I am not surprised that Trump underperformed in the polls. His voter demographic is inherently sceptical towards the media and institutions, so many of them will probably not take part in polls.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

All I can say is that I'm really sorry. I don't understand why people are like this. Authoritarianism isn't a good thing. I don't understand how America somehow regressed further than the start of the American government.

I'm worried this will be the catalyst to things getting worse where I live, and I'm not even American. Based on 2016, this outcome won't do us any favors either. I just hope that things turn out for the best

[–] MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org 20 points 1 week ago

It will, all of the fascist cunts have a world with no repercussions. So Ukraine falls, Palestinians all get killed, Orban does some kind of shit, every cunt you can think of does whatever. And we've yet to see what the orange cunt does

[–] luciole@beehaw.org 32 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This is fucking revolting. I'm so full of bile this morning and I'm trying hard not to smear it all over the place. I'm sincerely worried for all of the people this presidency of sick fucks threatens. I wish I could cram all of you in my small apartment north of the border and cook the biggest batch of oatmeal cookies ever. I might have to avoid news for a while to find my footing again. What's the point of being informed if I can't cope.

[–] Celediel@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm sincerely worried for all of the people this presidency of sick fucks threatens.

Unfortunately, with his climate policies, that's every human on earth.

[–] Quexotic@beehaw.org 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I was worried I wouldn't live to meet my grandkids because of health issues. Guess I don't have to worry about that anymore, it'll be climate now. Fuck.

[–] pbjamm@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago

I moved my family from USA to BC last year, not because of Trump, but because I thought we could have a better life here. I did not realize how much better. I feel like I should start building bunk beds in my basement Tyler Durden style for all my friends who are still in the US.

I can not make sense of this election. I have been pretty pessimistic in the past, but never before would have believed that America was this rotten. The consequences of this will be dire, widespread, and long term.

[–] ColdWater@lemmy.ca 30 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Still baffled me that more than half of US population support him

[–] storksforlegs@beehaw.org 23 points 1 week ago

Americas garbage education system (which he wants to dismantle further) combined with people being inundated with false info means they live in an alternate universe

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

That's the kicker. No matter what Harris do, no matter how left her policy is, no matter how stern her gaza stance is, she's gonna lose. The world is moving toward right. My country's on the way there too unfortunately.

[–] Bewildebeest@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

tbh, i dont think toeing the biden line on gaza is what id call stern. if anything, i think she lost votes bc she couldn't commit to actual consequences for the genocide beyond a finger wagging.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat 30 points 1 week ago (2 children)

No. She lost because a massive Russian and US-fascist campaign corrupted the state of the media until people couldn’t tell up from down.

“I care so much about the Palestinian people that I have no choice but to become ‘unexcited’ about the only candidate of the two who doesn’t actively want Netanyahu to exterminate them even harder” is yet another example of the nonsense-logic they managed to get into the conversation. If Biden had been taking a hard line on weapons shipments, the big catastrophe about the left candidate would have been something else. I can almost guarantee it.

[–] pbjamm@beehaw.org 7 points 1 week ago

She lost because too many americans are racist, sexist and apparently rotten to the core. There is no policy position that Harris could have taken that would change any of that because to MAGA none of that matters. Only Dear Leader matters.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

False equivalency will be the death of our country. The media has been pushing this line for decades, even when it has become clear that the GOP has been getting more and more extreme during that time.

Even Jon Stewart immediately started pushing this garbage that none of this really matters, and we can just live our lives like it was just any other election. Meanwhile, all of his colleagues in late night media has been fighting hard to combat the disinformation in their own way, and this is how he rewards them.

Hey, Jon... in the words of Jon Stewart: "Go fuck yourself!"

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I don't mean toeing the biden line, i mean stern against israel. I might have spoke too soon because we might get the full picture once we see the voter turnout. So far it seems like american vote for trump, without exception.

[–] Doom@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

she lost because she tried to play games with lives. should've been strong on Ukraine and Palestine

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Trump has been strong on his opinions on both Ukraine and Palestine, and his opinions were fucking terrible.

Those that didn't vote against that are a problem.

[–] Doom@ttrpg.network 6 points 1 week ago

I fully agree I voted but I think her inability to have strong positions inspired nobody

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

not a meaningful difference, but if it's true that only a fifty-something percent voted, then the other half just doesn't care what is happening with them and their folks

[–] TheRtRevKaiser@beehaw.org 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey @UngodlyAudrey@beehaw.org, I know we don't really know each other and I'm just a random dude on the internet but I'm shattered for you and other folks like you that are rightly scared by this outcome. I'm raising kids in this nightmare and I'm terrified of what they're going to face growing up. I don't know what to do either. I know this is all empty words but it's what I've got right now.

[–] UngodlyAudrey@beehaw.org 13 points 1 week ago

thank you. I really appreciate that.

[–] t3rmit3@beehaw.org 22 points 1 week ago

My nephew is trans, with an openly hostile anti-trans father (my POS Trumper brother, who luckily does not live with his kids), and lives in a swing state that went red last night. Very worried for him and every other trans person in this shit hole.

I'm also pissed off that, based on the numbers we're seeing, this is the second time that Democrat voters across the country have sat out rather than elect a woman. Honestly, I shouldn't even be surprised anymore.

Stay strong, everyone, things are gonna get rough.

[–] Scrumpf_Dabogy@beehaw.org 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I do not fall under any of the demographics that will be targeted under Trumps regime, other than being a registered Democrat, I guess. But I'm still fucking terrified. Economic disparity is going to skyrocket. The environment is toast. We may see military or militarized police knocking down doors. This is a nightmare.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat 11 points 1 week ago

We may see military or militarized police knocking down doors.

We absolutely will. What did you think mass deportations meant?

Do you think that every one of these millions of "illegal" persons being deported or otherwise detained will get due process to prove that they are actually a citizen? They barely get that now.

Do you think it won't expand beyond the immigrants who are on that list, once it gets going and no one's put a stop to it when it was "immigrants"?

I talked to someone in my family today who said he's probably safe, because of certain reasons and the category that he's in. I'm not convinced that he is.

[–] Kwakigra@beehaw.org 15 points 1 week ago

I'm at one of the biggest airports in the world in the middle of a very red state today. The mood is somber. I have never seen this airport this quiet. There is no sense of pride or celebration here, and I know the majority of people around me voted for Trump.

If I were to speculate, I see scared faces and other faces too guilty to look anyone in the eye. Eye contact among strangers in an expectation here under normal circumstances, but not today. Everyone is aware on some level that this is a bad thing.

[–] petrescatraian@libranet.de 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

@UngodlyAudrey Whatever you do, don't plan on moving to Eastern Europe. Trump will leave us all at the mercy of Russians*.

*That is, if you think the situation under the Russian influence will still be worse than under Trump

[–] UngodlyAudrey@beehaw.org 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't think I'll be able to go anywhere, realistically, anyway. I'm going to hold down the fort in my blue state and hope they shield me from the worst.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That won't last long. They'll enact federal laws to make all of it illegal.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would like to think blue States will put up a fight. But I guess it depends on project 2025 and how they react to that.

If they let it happen, then idk I guess that's that.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They will put up a fight. They will fight like Democratic state senators in Oklahoma. They will fight like the Weiße Rose. And then they will lose.

They can't fight federal law, and they can't fight against an uncaring, sociopathic GOP majority in Congress.

[–] Megaman_EXE@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago

I mean, when federal law has been manipulated and tampered with, I think the question becomes, will people allow it to happen, or will they resist?

And at that point, I have no idea. You would be looking at mass protests and / or civil war at that point. They're either going to have to be ready to literally fight for their rights or just give up I guess. If there's no way to fight it "legally" (I use this in quotations because the GOP seems to want to change the rules so nobody can oppose them), then I suppose those are the only other two options.

[–] Emtity_13@lemmy.sdf.org 12 points 1 week ago

Around 52% of the population voted that was eligible to vote. And over 15 million less people voted this election cycle compared to last.

This is what the people are voting for (or lack of voting) then they reap what they sow.

[–] Zementid@feddit.nl 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Well feels like election fraud. They are projecting after all and didn't shut up about it. The question is, how they did it.

On the other side, it doesn't matter. It's an alternative reality. Whatever they want, they can manufacture.

Welcome to Cyberpunk.

I spent this morning getting the paperwork ready to get my passport and learning what I need to do to get out. I'm going to need to figure out some financial stuff and either sell or ship my vehicle, but the more I look the more appealing it seems. This has been a wakeup call for me. Things in the US are really screwed up, even before a second Trump term, and I absolutely can go live a better life somewhere else.

[–] Crotaro@beehaw.org 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey there, Millie, if your path crosses (or ends in) Germany, I'd be happy to give you a warm welcome. While I can't just drive across the country, I can try my best to help you with the language, bureaucratical processes and any culture shock you may or may not get.

Of course, this offer also stands for anyone else in a similar boat!

[–] millie@beehaw.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm looking at moving to the Netherlands! I have somewhere to stay, I've been starting to learn Dutch, and I'm in the process of getting all my plans sorted out! I do have some friends in Germany that I want to come visit at some point once I'm settled in, though, so maybe we could meet up at some point! It definitely would be good to sort of build some community in Europe!

[–] Crotaro@beehaw.org 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That sounds like a solid plan! By the looks of it, you already checked the requirements to actually get into the Netherlands and live there for more than just a couple of months.

I can't imagine how bad it must be for you to basically have to uproot your entire life, but I wish you the best of luck (wherever you actually have to rely on luck, like processing times for documents). It's great to know that you do already have a couple of people in Europe at least adjacent to where you plan to go.

And sure! I do live in Bavaria, so it's not the closest distance, but I'm certain we could eventually organise a meetup at some point.

[–] tardigrada@beehaw.org 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

@UngodlyAudrey

We don't know each other and I don't know how to help you and others in a similar situation, but I've just read this:

Sarah McBride makes history as first transgender member of Congress

Maybe there is also a faint spark of hope today.

[–] UngodlyAudrey@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago

I saw that. I'm very glad we got one of our own in Congress, but it's likely too little, too late.
