The Russians have been known to sprinkle anti-personnel mines all through these areas. Seems not in this case, but for me personally I would be as sceptical as you are.

Given the proximity the mines are put together, wouldn't they all chain explode when one of them detonates?

Soviet Union was stockpiling weapons for the final showdown with the west through out the Cold War. Can't imagine how many of them were layed like this. Thousands, or even more than a million at that point?
