The movie was actually pretty bad, but it's nice to see the director is cool

based on the title I thought the movie would be about spiders or a dude with long legs but we got something scarier, Nic Nage

To be fair here, it doesn't really resolve the critique over if the character is using transphobic signalling and stereotypes in order to signal disgust and horror to the viewer, which is a critique I've seen elsewhere.

I've seen a specific scene pointed to where the villain is shopping at a pharmacy or other similar store and a child points at him and goes "that creepy man is here again" followed by the villain screaming in rage in his car.

My take it after having seen it is that I don't think the intention was to traffic in transphobia stereotypes, etc. The villain is supposed to a like satanic glam rock weirdo cis man. But at the same time, it's coming out in an atmosphere of extremely virulent transphobia, so I think those readings are pretty much inescapable

Coming to this a month late, as I just watched the movie and did some searching to see what people thought.

I’m not sure if I totally missed something or people were just reading too much into it, but I didn’t get any kind of trans messaging/interpretation at all. I just thought that Nic Cage was supposed to be a Satanic weirdo (and as you said, I took him as a cis-man). Honestly, Cage’s character being trans didn’t cross my mind at all, I just thought that he was a weirdo.

I’ve actually really liked everything this guy has directed. Cool to see he’s got a new one out, and cool to see he’s actually cool.

Read the plot synopsis and it sounds like satanic panic bullshit

I saw it a few weeks ago. The cinematography is great but the plot is kind of dull.

Cages makeup is so good i didn't recognize him at first. Movie is decidedly not good... Sadly not "so bad its good" either...If you watch it, watch it for nic's great makeup job and his acting his heart out, in that good ol' cage style. I think he said he was channeling his mom for the part which makes it way funnier too.

yeah the movie didn't rly meet my expectations but it did raise some interesting thematic/lore questions

I was extremely unhappy with the last 1/3 of the film. I don't want to spoil but that "twist" was bunk, the final murders off-camera. Not even sound! I don't even know how to properly critique it but best i got is it was a slow burn style film and i expect more oomph in my endings in a slow burn film. (See: Hereditary)

I Left the theatre feeling unfulfilled but make no mistake. i will always watch a nic cage movie. Always

Not even sound!

I remember there being sound

You heard something happening in the next room? I missed it, only seeing the aftermath and being upset lol

[–] ProfessorOwl_PhD@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Completed unrelated, but if you like slow burn films with oomph in the ending try Killer Joe. Incredible performance from Matthew Mccoughananny.

[–] the_post_of_tom_joad@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

I will, thanks for the tip. I usually avoid mccough movies (not his acting just the movies he chooses really) so this was off my radar.

The vibes in the first half were so dreadfully good but the movie did veer toward disappointment as more plot needed to be revealed imo
