Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate, wagering that a former red-district congressman with a progressive streak can help her win over working-class voters in battleground states needed to beat Donald Trump in November.

“The entire country is about to see why their friends from Minnesota can’t stop bragging about Governor Walz,” Minnesota DFL Party Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “By picking a servant leader born and raised in a small town who has dedicated his career to protecting freedoms and lifting up working families, Vice President Harris has chosen the perfect foil for [Trump running mate] JD Vance and his politics of resentment.”

What he's done in Minnesota with a 1 seat majority- universal free school meals - legal weed - carbon free electricity by 2040 - tax rebates for the working class up to $1,300 (making under $150k per year) - banned conversion therapy - red flag laws for guns - universal background checks for guns - automatic voter registration - free public college (under $150k per year) - 12 weeks paid family leave - 12 weeks paid sick leave - automatic voter registration - free public college (under $80k) - ban on PFAS (forever chemicals)

That’s fkn dope.

Why did he have red flag laws, universal background checks, and automatic voter registration twice?

And is free public college under 120k or under 80k?

2.2 billion what?

Editing to clarify

Copy/paste errors? Few duplications in there. Still a pretty impressive list

Sounds like a big government dream!

He has a very pro-Israel record, but also has weirdly wishy-washy rhetoric about it.

Interesting pick. Maybe uncommitted spooked her?

it's another tim kaine moment; someone who has all the right qualities but no celebrity outside his pocket of the country and won't help budge the election needle.

Shapiro would have been a bad and divisive choice. Walsh was the best of the bunch and I'm absolutely stunned that she picked him.

Pelosi has been publicly pushing hard for Walz

"I wasn't familiar with your game" moment lmao

Her removing Biden and getting Walz is all pretty decent tbh. Way better than the norm of Hilldog Dems failing constantly

You just described every VP pick ever.

Is she trying to loose?

Edit: did you mean to say pro-Palestinian? If she was worried about the uncommitted movement that unseated Biden, wouldn't she pick someone pro-Palestine?

[–] Kumikommunism@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

No, he's pro-Israel. But talks about it in weird liberation language that is common to Zionists in "progressive" circles. Very sinister.

And the people the Dems are trying to pull in with this move are not those with enough conviction to actually care about Palestine. He is just someone who has a few middling "progressive achievements" that libs can point to as a defence against the truth that Kamala isn't really that progressive.

He's probably the most progressive governor in the country. Minnesota has passed a ton of great social democratic stuff over the past few years. Which obviously isn't socialism, but it's better than what everyone else has done, including Shapiro.

Also, agreed on the Zionism. But a progressive Zionist is much better than a militant one like Shapiro

Not sure who would've been better than Walz, tbh

Yes and it's an indictment of this country lol

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 months ago

He's sympathetic to the anti-genocide protests and very vocal about it. Like I said, wishy washy.
