Hello new Lemmy friends!
Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.
The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.
Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.
We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

The Shiners are all pushing adult diagnosed ADHD but, to the best of my knowledge, none of them have a formal diagnosis. It’s probably on the list of trending topics for 2024
For anyone just self-diagnosing, (firstly it’s sometimes accurate) but you need to be referred to a psychologist from your family Dr. for testing, and it is not free. It’s not a trip to Dr then boom- pills! No. also It’s not widely recognized by many organizations (sucks but true).
From CAMH: You might consider testing /seeking diagnosis if “Any first-degree family member was diagnosed with ADHD (i.e., the patient’s child, parent or sibling). The patient was diagnosed with ADHD as a child or adolescent. The patient felt a calming, focused sensation on a psychostimulant, energy drink, cannabis or cocaine. The patient had psychometric testing as a child or adolescent that suggested they had a learning disability, particularly a problem with working memory. The patient or a family member might say, “I think I [they] have ADHD.” The patient has a current diagnosis of depression or anxiety. If any of these situations apply, have the patient complete The adult self assessment scale”
(go to CAMH to get this ).
Then it says “The tool does not make the diagnosis and does not have a threshold marker, but it helps you decide whether to consider ADHD if a patient answers “yes” to most of the questions. It might also help to have the patient’s partner complete the tool.”
ADHD can be very different for all people and isn’t just something to throw around and no not everyone has it.Please never ever ever get medical advice from people who are influencers. Please if you cannot afford Dr appt (outside of Canada) go online to reputable sites. Some Drs just prescribe anything to anyone and that’s not good. There should be no shame in getting diagnosed or using meds to help, but throwing around that everyone has ADHD is very dangerous. I’d start in Canada with Canadian Mental Health Association first, then call your Dr, and advocate for yourself.
This is so annoying as it makes it harder for others who have actual ADHD, especially those who are diagnosed as adults. Ugh.
Agreed. I was really lucky in my new primary doctor believed me after just chatting with me for 10 minutes asking specific questions after I wanted to be tested for being on the spectrum. Lol. He basically said. Well. I am diagnosed and I generally can tell if I am around someone else that is. So you should go talk to… 😆 34 and things started to click finally. Weird life we live.
I’m glad thing worked out so well for you. I have heard getting the right diagnosis is life-changing
Good! I actually am not “formally” diagnosed because I have significant hearing loss and was told by two psychologists who specialize in ADHD diagnosis that I won’t be able to do many/most of the tests. My doctor had me complete a few questionnaires, took a case history and started me on medication based on that. I’m doing really well after some adjustments. So I feel extra sensitive to influencers undermining real diagnoses as I already have a form of imposter syndrome due to my experience. I don’t really tell people that I have ADHD.
Yeah dude the influencers out there are creating an issue for people with actual ailments. It’s fucked. I am glad you were able to find a solution with your doctor! Most of the tests specific to adhd were indeed auditory. And I failed them so bad. I thought I aced it. She said she watched my face change and knew I wasn’t lying cause it was so bad she thought I was joking around based on the IQ test she gave me prior 😆💀
Thank you for validating me! And haha it’s interesting how so many people with adhd struggle with auditory tasks. I have thought about getting an IQ test done for the heck of it!
SM Infliencers make a mockery of a lot diagnosis both mental health wise and physical health. I didn’t really notice it until my daughter, during her later high school years, started suggesting she had symptoms of all sorts of ailments. I saw the link between what she was consuming online and her symptoms
Oh wow! That is scary and I don’t doubt at all that influencers make people think they’re unhealthy just because they themselves are looking for attention. Ugh. I provided a bit more context to my comment below to a different person!
Her buddy Renee started with the ADHD meds somewhat recently. Then there is Cat&Nat. Cat is for sure on them.
I don’t like how a lot of Influencers throw around ADHD or OCD without know what it really means.
