What's a white whale?
It's a reference to Moby Dick. It's something you really want, but seems unattainable.
Subjective, but a specific item of interest or missing part of a collection that has proven difficult to acquire.
Books no longer in circulation or of a particular niche/rarity, episodes of an show, a version of a song or media that was once available in limited form and removed from the source, bootleg recordings.
