That seems so short sighted. Like why make something up that will absolutely be refuted within hours? It just makes people not trust you.

Because people still defend them and deny their eyes and ears. I was literally arguing with a tankie earlier who still denies that Hamas did it and still claims that a quintillon innocent Palestinian kids died in the missile strike that flattened the hospital. They don't care what is true. Their only and ultimate criteria of morality is "Israel bad" and "US bad" which means reality doesn't matter.
