I think there's probably a good argument for not going easy on liberalism, ever, because if the roles were reversed they would not give us any room to grow and they would not hesitate. I think there's probably a fine line between showing no mercy and coming across as toxic and giving them an excuse to defederate so no idea what the right call is tbh
"We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror."
[Hexbear is one of the more active instances in the lemmyverse]
Our turn has finally come comrades!
I think a step back from siege mentality when interacting with other instances is probably strategic. Assume good faith until proven otherwise. "Bullying works" is a vibe that I think is more often than not inaccurate. Rather, it's a fun and effective way to interact with trolls and wreckers. Meanwhile we should project a willingness to go above and beyond to foster good-faith discussion with those willing to have it.
A lot of people are proving otherwise with their first reply.
And frankly I don't want to try to lead all of these grown ass adults out of the brambles of Capitalist brain worms by the teeth starting from first principles every day in every single conversation. We'll spend the rest of our lives trying to teach adult children on what is for the most part the only place on the Anglophone internet where you can be an ML without being screamed at by very ignorant people.
I cannot emphasize enough that Hexbear is one of, if not the, only safe harbor for commies that's actually active and interesting.
It's also one of the few pillars of counterculture within its sphere, which is why I think it's important that we don't squander whatever potential it may have.
False consciousness has to be deconstructed wherever possible. We must never stop explaining
As much as I understand the want for a safe place to hang out, as much as I personally enjoy being able to let my guard down when I'm on here, this kind of stuff is about as close as you can get to important when it comes to social media.
I'm very proud of the comrades who've gone to tremendous lengths to engage these people in good faith. Doing so serves multiple purposes: either convincing the person to think differently, or convincing readers to think differently, or if nothing else casting a shadow of doubt on readers' confidence in red scare propaganda and mischaracterizations of communists.
In the lemm.ee meta thread there was an obstinant fuck that refused to engage in good faith (turned out he was a landlord, go figure), but the users engaging him with well-sourced claims and counterclaims elevate people's perceptions of leftism in general. It wasn't for him, it was for the average working class liberals reading the hot new drama.
The dominant class always has an upper hand in cultural hegemony, but our goal here isn't to convince everyone immediately and universally, to gain control of the superstructure-- it's to provide a counternarrative to the dominant narratives(s) carefully cultivated by capitalist [social] media.
It's clear when interacting with these people that many or most of them have never really been exposed to such a counternarrative. Just look at how uncomfortable they get when someone pushes back on their ideas in good faith. Probably don't even know what good-faith conversation on the internet feels like!
But at least a dozen people have visibly listened just in the time since federation, not to mention lurkers who may see these exchanges and start to think about things differently. For every one landlord or petty bourgeois person who can't be convinced for obvious material reasons, there's 10 or 100 working people that the ideas will resonate with. The very existence of a visible counternarrative or counter hegemony is instrumental in bringing about social change. There has to be something for people to gather around, something to replace the end-of-history capitalist realism they've been ingrained with.
Ah lmao my bad
It's partially that, but it is also partially that the reason that we aren't listening to your advice is that we have done this whole song and dance before, some of us for years, nearly decades. There is a reason we adopted the chapo posting method, and it's not because it's 'a vibe'. It is a strategy. A strategy for what? Staying sane while posting in generalized liberal instances.
We will attract like-minded posters incidentally, we don't need to target them, there is no reason to ever assume 'good-faith' in anonymous online discourse, it is a privilege to be provided sparingly.
I'm not going to go all 'back in my days in the posting-mines', but we have done this whole thing before and we will likely have to do it again.
