There is a Portuguese writer that is very critical of the bible, I think you would like to read him, he's a noble prize winner, Jose Saramago. He really exposes the hipocrisy of the church.
You don't need to be a noble winner to sus out the bullshit in the Bible. Just be mildly sceptical and less credulous than a 4 year old.
He really manages to portrait it really well though.
