(i ripped this off wikipedia real fast so sorry if it's lib)

In October 1776, the Public Universal Friend contracted an epidemic disease and was bedridden and near death with a high fever. Their family summoned a doctor from Attleboro, six miles away, and neighbors kept up a death-watch at night. The fever broke after several days. The Friend later reported that [deadname redacted] had died, receiving revelations from God through two archangels who proclaimed there was "Room, Room, Room, in the many Mansions of eternal glory for Thee and for everyone". The Friend further said that [deadname redacted]'s soul had ascended to heaven and the body had been reanimated with a new spirit charged by God with preaching his word, that of the "Publick Universal Friend", describing that name in the words of Isaiah 62:2 as "a new name which the mouth of the Lord hath named".

From that time on, the Friend refused to answer to their deadname, ignoring or chastising those who insisted on using it. When visitors asked if it was the name of the person they were addressing, the Friend simply quoted Luke 23:3 ("thou sayest it").โ€Š Identifying as neither male nor female, the Friend asked not to be referred to with gendered pronouns. Followers respected these wishes; they referred only to "the Public Universal Friend" or short forms such as "the Friend" or "P.U.F.", and many avoided gender-specific pronouns even in private diaries. When someone asked if the Friend was male or female, the preacher replied "I am that I am", saying the same thing to a man who criticized the Friend's manner of dress (adding, in the latter case, "there is nothing indecent or improper in my dress or appearance; I am not accountable to mortals").

editorial note: I think this is a very cool story and I really love hearing it. We've been around forever and we've been doing variations of this forever. It's really beautiful

I don't think I've ever longed for site admins to allow pronoun-maxing more than today. I feel like I need a third set of pronouns for some reason cat-confused

We should all aspire to be like @Edie@hexbear.net

If it would be accepted, I could look into making the changes. I just don't want to work on it if the answer is going to be no due to moderation.

It's tough to determine whether or not to do it, or how it should be done, especially since people were trolling when they first added the feature (I think this was brought up in the purge announcement thread?). If the moderation could be done, it would be nice to have, and Hexbear's had many purges since it's inception, so maybe it's in a better place for that kind of feature now.

I mean, adding a third is just.. adding another dropdown? And then a fourth, and then a fifth, and then...

And I'm just not really sure how that could be misused.

You're right, idk why I was thinking making them a completely custom thing was the only way to add more. If pronouns are approved by mods, then people couldn't be reactionary with the pronoun options. I have no idea how any of this works, would there be a way to make it so it keeps asking for pronouns unless the most recent box says "none/use name"? If so, that would be amazing, and I see no reason why the admins could reject it.

It's possible, but there are two limits: 1) hexbear specific code only allows 2 pronouns, 2) lemmy code limits display names to NUM chars, which is set to 80 on hexbear.

Personally I'd just add NUM (depending on what people/admins feel like) extra dropdowns in the settings, easier and works nearly as well.

If pronouns are approved by mods

They are rn.
