Example:
- Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
- Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). How is that a racist statement?
I also eat curry (actually made some myself last saturday) and I'm a white cis male, so the least likely target of any -cism (at least any that can be taken seriously)?
Should I feel offended by that statement? lol
Because Harris is both Black and Indian heritage and curry and fried chicken are the two foods most stereotypically associated with each aspect of her heritage. It's not like he picked two random foods.
Wait
Fried chicken is associated with black people in the US?
Are you shitting me?
Over here in Europe it's considered redneck-food lol
Also thanks for explaining and not downvoting like the other toxic fucks here. Lemmy really is becoming reddit 2.0, huh?
Yeah there are a few others like watermelon and soul food.
Same energy as beans with Mexicans.
Associating Soul food with (southern) African Americans doesn't feel racist to me. Am I in danger of accidentally offending someone?
I would say depends on context. I heard some edgy comments in 90s.
It doesn't make very much sense if you're not a racist, and yet...
Oh yeah. I've definitely heard fried chicken and watermelons being used in racist context.
I've only ever heard soul food referred to in a positive (I.e. tasty) manner.
My God how I envy your innocence.
Idk it apparently gets you downvoted here
I switched to Lemmy because I was told it would be less toxic than Reddit. But I guess that was a fucking lie.
Might as well switch back to reddit if this keeps up. At least They don't support genocidal regimes there there.
From my point of view, the racist food tropes being highlighted here are overtones and not undertones, and fairly obvious ones inside America. Especially provided the specific context of the subject matter.
If that doesn't resonate with you, you are probably surrounded by exceptionally wonderful people, and I hope this is the case for you.
About Reddit/Lemmy... tech is tech.
Oh man, once I came over here and found out that just like reddit, it's an echo chamber for the left...
I think you know where to go to find your people. There's 2 socials I can think of off the top of my head that'll be right up your alley!
Oh man, you just made the mistake of pointing out that you're white...
