Have you tried Soulseek? They have users that have some HQ MP3s, as well as FLACs and other lossless formats. Sometimes you have to like get them to add you to their private share list, but it's not that hard. You just ask which album/tracks you need, they'll either make them publically available or add you to their private share list. They're not hard asses or anything like that (some might be, but I haven't run into users like that).

Also, rutracker.org and/or rutracker.ru, they both have a pretty good record of keeping up with releases, especially undergorund stuff (metal, EDM, IDM, etc.).

Don't know the condition in which DC++ is nowadays, used to be pretty popular for sharing music. Mostly HQ MP3s, but some users also had a lot of lossless music. Worth a shot as well IMO. Signing up for servers can be a PITA though (or at least it used to be).

If you want to download and keep your own music, drm-free, this is the way.

DC++ is my preference for music but the good ones are near impossible to get in like the top private trackers. You can’t even say what they are

Slav Art, RU Tracker, and Soulseek is what I’d recommend to normies. You can also try OPS and RED if you’re a FLAC FREAK but those have barriers. Surmountable but more time required than the third I mentioned in the start (I assume SlavArt DIVOLT is still around and public?). You’ll get most stuff with those three anyways especially if you’re not into some real obscure shit. Maybe add on yt-Dlp but not gonna be the best quality.

I've tried it, it's a bit slow (few hundred kbps down), but i couldn't figure out how to also upload. do i need a VPN or is it safe to go without?

Depends where you live, regarding the VPN I mean. I've never used a VPN in my life, but, than again, I live in 3rd world country (kinda...). It's a P2P protocol, so if you block P2P on your firewall, yeah, in most cases, Soulseek gets blocked as well.

Regarding the download speed, they have like maybe 100, 200 users that carry most of the load, so they have to limit traffic per peer 🤷.

You have to define a shared folder/folders, that's how you share. So, share your music library and off you go. Sooner or later, you'll show up in search results and people will start downloading from you.
