1984 is not about mass surveillance. It's about lowering the langage and culture so that you don't even have word to criticize the system.

I think this is my first stuff on Lemmy. I'll wait a bit before posting a post, I'm not as brave as you ;)
In US, I think it was the initial intent of 2nd amendment. Arm the population not to resist an enemy or an invasion, but to resist its own government if it endanger a free state.
