Some argued that the new requirements were to protect cars from theft.

Car thieves: Oh noeeees… anyway 🤷

Say… how far on the dark side of the moon am I living if I never heard about this streamer before? xD

Note, not mine. Similar to mine. In fact totally down my alley :D

(Yes, I posted this over at https://discuss.tchncs.de/c/diysimulators too - I have no idea how to cross-post from Lemmy - can this be done at all?)

⚠️ grandpa gaming inbound

In 2020 I checked some old backup disks of mine and found to my utmost joy a copy of my former UT2003 installation. This is a Linux native 32bit build that is now over 20 years old. Well, LinuxGaming is hard because who can support 500 distributions, right? This worked just fine in 2020 on Fedora 31. Today I gave it another spin in 2024 on Fedora 38 on Wayland with PipeWire 😀

Hell yeah, the muscle memory is still there 🤘🤓🤘

(tbf the SDL1.2 compat lib rocks most of this but it's really all still there)

I had a bad feeling about this but it somehow worked out.

Added support for hardware with up to 128 buttons that is registered as an input device (Issue ID 1763)

Nothing short of a miracle 🤓

[-] bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 6 months ago

Yes, the monitor is a separate entity but some of the buttons at the bottom are used to control it's OSD menu. It's not a touchscreen because it's salvaged from a very old laptop (and I despise touchscreens :D). It's software is a home brew React app basically as described for the old version here: https://simpit.dev/version-1/mfd-software/

I have a list for the buttons yes. All buttons are connected. I'm working on a write-up of the wiring. Some can not be read by ED due to button limits. I work around this by remapping them to keyboard presses (AntiMicroX). It's really so much that I can hardly showcase all in one little video 🤓 Some are currently not even in use and are crammed below the contraption. There's also a total of 17 status indicators which can display various states. That's a NeoPixel so it can be extended if needed. It's all driven and organized by an Arduino Mega. It's daemon is a Rust program that also raises a virtual joystick with the system.

Thanks :-)

Heh, yeah I'm like that too: "oooh buttons" 🤓 It's completely homebrew beside the X52 Pro. Some parts are salvaged form old electronics. What part interests you most? I wrote some details here before: https://SimPit.dev/version-2/

o7 CMDRs, made a tiny demo video show-casing the SimPit in Elite Dangerous 🙃

Just slaughtering pirates (wasn't in the cockpit for months) but you get to see it from a first person perspective this time because I strapped the camera to my headphones 🙃

As an avid[1] X4 Foundations player I'm more than happy that I stumbled over @egosoft@mastodon.social today.

I couldn't find a cross referencing link from their website [yet] but I did check back on their Discord and got the confirmation by belgoray that this account is indeed official

[1] I'm really batshit crazy about this game - heck I even hacked it to sideload an UDP server to interface with my home cockpit 🤓

[-] bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 7 months ago

At least Steam lets you still download it when you purchased it before. I checked today just to make sure it really does still download. Granted, this is as long as Valve may exist but I don't think there is anything DRM related here that would stop anyone from making a copy of the downloaded game 🤔 May try that later.

[-] bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 7 months ago

Mebbe I should have phrased it more as "underrated in the beginning when it went on sale and was considered a sales fail" 🤔

[-] bekopharm@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 7 months ago

Well, I can confirm that it can still be downloaded. It's notable that this is one of the few that even got a native Linux PC version as well and yes I agree on the narrative that this game is very very underrated. Not your average military shooter.

Wingman - An X-Wing Story | Star Wars Fan Film was released today. It's a Star Wars fan movie with 50 minutes length and plenty of pew pew.

Right, of course 🤦 I had the sign up address in my password db in the username field 🤦 Thanks!

Laughable selling this as "Improving gamer experience" breaking another existing standard.

Saying this especially from the DIY angle where custom controllers are kinda the thing.

Also lol because "competitive" gameplay. Gear always wins the day - just like in meat space.

Ah well, one good thing may come from this: Plenty of cheaper second hand controllers that I may buy as replacements to connect to my Steam Link. This one isn't too picky when it comes to controllers. My current mix on that is a Steam Controller, a Wii-U controller and some no-name "works-on-all" wireless controller.

There's always the one that can't grasp that VR is not for everyone (or that making something is also a hobby).

We met on the Mumble like 3 days ago :P

Alas yes, join the SC LUG. It's the best LUG out there [for penguins] 🤣

What you see is a glorified DIY joystick controller with a LCD ('MFD') and plenty of RGB inspired by a VF-1 (Block 6) Valkyrie of the Macross franchise.

I use it mainly to play Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, X4: Foundations and plenty of other Space Pew Pew.

Three monitors form a wall around a box that embeds a fourth monitor, many buttons and switches in various colours are also implemented. Some LED display the status of a spaceship. The computer game that is played with this contraption is Elite Dangerous Odyssey

It's mobile and can be stashed easily because my battlestation is, unlike most gaming rigs, also my workstation and has to move a lot. It's also frequently occupied by my kids who also love clicky buttons and compete with me for stick time :D

It's completely DIY and made on a budget (no really). It's also Work In Progress, like probably any home cockpit out there.

Picture of the building phase of the frame. One unpainted panel is already screwed to the wooden frame. Other panels do not exist yet or are still cardboard mockups

For the PC it's just a joystick and an additional display. The magic starts to happen when I manage to interface with the games to display live game data and adjust the blinken lights depending on the current ship telemetry.

Am I crazy? Yes, probably. It's a hobby and when Corona happened indoor hobbies became kinda a thing again 🤓

Hej, I noticed an odd problem with my Gnome search recently. That thing that starts searching when the "super-key" is pressed (or the smart corner is triggered). When I start typing some text Gnome starts searching in all kinds of corners of the PC.

That is until my NAS system is not responding. It's automounted to ~/NAS/ and when that remote box is busy I get a complete freeze of my desktop. As in no HID device has any effect. Just seeing occasional disk activity (blinky LED) but that's it.

This takes about 5 minutes before it recovers. Only to start again on the next key stroke!

I guess some search provider checks the $HOME folder and waits for a timeout on the unresponsive cifs share. I want to know which one that is and if I can persuade it to search on local fs only.

Any pointers?

Asking because I remember similar from e.g. Okuna where a shiton of communities were created during the gold rush but many were left unmoderated for months until they eventually ceased.

And at what point would a transfer be considered by staff?
