We've been interested in hosting communities that aren't exactly Star Trek, but also make a certain kind of sense for this instance for a while. - Quark's was the first step, and now we've decided to pull the trigger on !doctorwho@startrek.website - with the new season up and running, this seems like as good a time as any. Whovians new and old alike are welcome to stop by!

I tested the waters over in c/quarks this week, and I've decided that between my own interest in hosting a Doctor Who community, and the new season/series/whatever starting up, I might as well pull the trigger.

Regular episode discussions will go up weekly while the new season airs. I would love to see some discussion about any and all eras of the show, the audios, the spinoffs, and whatever else is on your mind.

This discussion was held in !quarks@startrek.website before I decided to pull the trigger and start this community - please feel free to discuss these episodes at the link above.

IT'S A SIGN

Oh wow, that's probably my favorite VOY episode, it's really great without being gimmicky - good pick!

Another good VOY episode might be "The Void" - a nice little diplomatic episode with a dash of action.

Whenever I see a conversation along the lines of "what episode should I show my friend/partner/etc. to get them hooked on Star Trek," the suggestions are pretty predictable - your "best" episodes that are regarded to represent the franchise at its peak.

I like to take a different approach, trying to find episodes that I feel are most representative of the series - the "average" Star Trek episode. If you show someone the "best," there's nowhere to go but down, and it can set someone up for disappointment.

In the case of Star Trek, I actually find this pretty difficult, and I don't think I've come up with any that I feel are really good answers, so I'm taking it to the crowd: what are the most representative episodes of Star Trek.

To me, these are the boxes that probably need to be ticked:

  • Enjoyable (obviously).
  • A conventional structure that doesn't deviate from the norm too much - this is a flexible concept, but I think it excludes things like "Darmok," or "Tapestry," or "In the Pale Moonlight," which are not really conventional.
  • Any series is fair game.

What do you think? What are some "normal" Star Trek episodes that would serve as good representation of what the franchise usually is?

"The Devil's Chord"

All right, it's hard to make the case that this one was less silly than "Space Babies," but I enjoyed this one more, largely on the strength of Jinkx Monsson's delightfully unhinged performance as Maestro, and the fact that I love The Beatles (not that they get a lot to do).

This is one of those high-concept episodes built around an interesting premise ("the world would end if there was no music") that DW often does really well. I think in this case, they could have done a little more to show the lives of the people in this music-free world, but it worked well enough.

Having Lennon/McCartney finish the Maestro off with the lost chord was blindingly obvious, and extremely perfect.

I've got to say, Chris Mason did an amazing job capturing John Lennon's mannerisms while singing. I happened to watch "Let It Be" the other day, and the guy did his homework. Pour one out for George and Ringo, though - they really didn't get anything to do.

My least favourite type of RTD episode is the Goofy RTD Episode, and this was definitely that. I doubt it will end up ranking too highly on my list by the end of the season.

That said, I always appreciate social commentary that's about as subtle as a sledgehammer, and the episode delivered on that. And Ncuti Gatwa's physical presence is something special - I don't think we've seen that kind of physicality since Matt Smith.

Also, uh, did the Doctor just suggest that the world of Star Trek is real in his universe?

This is obviously a sign that setting up this discussion thread was the right decision.

There's an update today, and (surprise, surprise)...no. Tenants were paid out for the remainder of this month, and they got their damage deposits back, but other than that they're on their own.

People assume that seasons are a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey...stuff.

I'm not sure when I'm actually going to be able to watch them, but I'm looking forward to the full Ncuti Gatwa experience!

"Space Babies"

LoglineRuby learns the Doctor’s amazing secrets when he takes her to a Baby Farm in the future that’s being run by babies, but threatened by a bogeyman.

Written by: Russell T. Davies

Directed by: Julie Anne Robinson

"The Devil's Chord"

LoglineWhen the Doctor and Ruby meet The Beatles, they discover that the all-powerful Maestro is changing history.

Written by: Russell T. Davies

Directed by: Ben Chessell

This thead is a trial balloon to gauge whether there's interest in having ongoing "Doctor Who" discussion threads, or perhaps a local community.

Everybody - and I mean everybody - loves Riker's donkey sauce.

Yeah...Culber had a pretty tough go of it when he went through it. I could see his feelings on it being...complicated.

Haha it was clear, just having some fun.
