What you’re describing is the holy grail of computer memory technology. If we had nonvolatile memory as fast as RAM, we would absolutely be using it instead. Unfortunately even the fastest SSD today would be a significant drop in speed from modern RAM.

What would the world look like if we fragmented the tech giants but then regulated them by requiring open standards so that things could mix and match as customers see fit?

If you’re in the mood for something more story based, I just played Disco Elysium on my deck and it was incredible. I’m currently slow burning my way through BG3 on it which is also a good experience but it requires some fiddling to get it running nicely.
