Man, I hate the Twitter model of following people instead of ideas or communities. Like, I don't give a shit what Lebron James or Stephen King thinks. I just want to complain about the most recent episode of some t.v. show I've watched or bicker with people about the definition of the word "authoritarianism." I know you can do that with Twitter, but the jumping off point of it is you have to give a shit what some specific person thinks at any given time. Which...I don't.

Same here, I was just griping about this, ha ha!

I mean this kindly but no one is forcing you to use twitter or threads

Yeah, I know, I'm just explaining why I don't like them from a design perspective. No one probably cares, but...oh well.

Just briefly browsing it and I think Twitter is definitely doomed at this point, if they weren't before this. Copying instagram followers to Threads gives it a massive boost right off the bat. All the "influencers" have immediate reach to their audience and it gives them "credibility" to people who will migrate from Twitter. The design is simple and familiar too.

Once they start shoving ads into it we'll see how it goes from there.

I’m so tired of ads just, in general, but especially in social media.

I might poke around it but I barely even use Instagram. But with Elon imploding Twitter, this is probably the best time for them to Launch.

Yea, I’m hoping with it being a big name celebs will join followed by everyday users. Which will introduce people to the fediverse.

Hopefully some of the big political figures jump to threads. I don't really care about or use twitter, but I can't deny the impact it has on elections. Kinda concerned about that leading into 2024. Meta is marginally better than Elon at this point, though it is 100% a 'lesser evil' sort of situation.

I tried Mastodon when I was looking at Reddit alternatives, then immediately switched over to Lemmy. I think I like coming to a forum/community on social media (Reddit, Lemmy), instead of following specific people (Twitter, Mastodon). Looks like Threads is set up that same way, so I’m not interested right now.

However, I do use Instagram to keep up with my friends and family and a few artists that post their work. So maybe I’ll eventually try it out if enough of my contacts switch over. I’ll just have to wait and see.

Since it seems to mainly be for Instagram people, looks like I have no use of it as I don’t use Instagram.

I suppose once ActivityPub integration is turned on, the barrier of entry for me following someone from the Threads instance will be much lower so I might end up following some people there from my Mastodon account. If they’re worth following, that is :)

My favorite part of this whole thing is now that the right-wing grift-o-sphere has joined, Meta has their accounts set up so that when people follow them there's a pop up warning saying "are you sure you want to follow this person that frequently lies and violates terms of service?"

It's so satisfying watching these slimeballs having a big mad about "censorship".
