I've been thinking of getting that game, though I am not sure on the development pace and state it is currently in.

Generally I love city builders of any kind and the game looks super interesting to me (and it is currently on sale :D ). What are your thoughts?

I've sunk over a dozen hours into it so far. It's a really enjoyable game, however it is truly in early access stage and the developer has made no illusions about that. It's playable, and largely bug free, but there's not a lot of depth available since many of the features are still in progress. Up to the release of the game, it's been developed by 1 person and he's hiring some additional staff but that all takes time to see fruition.

The graphics are beautiful, and the game has a great atmosphere. I love watching the buildings being constructed. The mechanics in the game work well, but there's a lot of buildings, resources, and advanced stages that need tweaking/implementing.

If you like what you see in the videos, and are OK with an actual early access game, knowing that features and improvements will be coming slowly, then id suggest getting it now. Otherwise, wait for the official release.

I will think about that. My biggest concern is actually the price. Even the reduced 29.99$ is a bit steep for a not so deep early access game imo πŸ€”

don't buy to game, it is still very much a demo

most people buying are just doing so to support development. I think dude got him self some staff now, so hopefully we get something half backed next year.

If you're just trying to figure out if it's worth it, why not use the 1 month trial/ friends pass for the Microsoft games pass? It's on there and how I played it.

I am on linux and I think it is not working there, though even if it did, I always forget to cancel those kinda subscriptions, so it'd not really an option for me... Though great tip for others

I bounced off of it, and went back to Farthest Frontier.

I was not a huge fan of the way the villagers are accrued and assigned; it felt like they were trying to emulate Banished, but didn't execute well on it.

I did love the way you draw housing plots, and the ability to add extensions onto houses that have different bonuses (e.g. a chicken coop that gives eggs).

I think if the city-builder+RTS hybrid aspect is very appealing to you, it's one of the few out there. If you want a more traditional city builder, check out Farthest Frontier.

I have not looked at it. What makes Farthest Frontier great?

[–] t3rmit3@beehaw.org 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I really like it's progression of resource tiers, and it's exploration mechanic that lets you delve into ruins to find artifacts that give you bonuses to town morale.

It also has a nice pseudo-complex farming system, where you can manage the soil composition to favor different crops (or just choose to plant the crops that that area's default soil lends itself to).

It also has randomized maps, which I like to reload until I find one with an interesting layout.

There is combat, but you can granularly control it, or disable it altogether (there are raiders, and wildlife like bears and wolves).

It feels very laid back, which is my jam.

Sounds great. I'll wishlist it for now and research it a bit more. I have way too much games already, but I just love this kinda game πŸ˜…

You and OP might also like Foundation. It does not have the same graphics style unfortunately but it has no grid structure which makes your villages and cities look very organic.

I actually have that, though I thought that it is not challenging enough. I've had the feeling that I hit the endgame pretty early and that not much is happening πŸ€”

I think it’s very fun, but a bit light in content at the moment, understandable as it is in early access.

The ground work and mechanics are clearly there already. It needs fleshing out, a lot really. But the visions is amazing, it feels like what I thought AOE2 was when I was 12

Have about 12 hours on it. Last played in April. I did enjoy the quarks of this with the combat built in with the city builder. The economy was interesting with the interchange of regions. My biggest gripe is the way you have to figure out the marketplace adjacent to the residents to help level up the housing.

I haven't played with the new patch but looking forward to jump back into it.

The combat takes me bad to red alert 2 days which feels nostalgic.

Would be interesting to hear how much progress the game made in the ~3 months

No one would spend more than 100 hours in that beautiful boring little one map early access non AAAA game. absolute no one. ☺️

(development goes to balancing and bug fixes afaik)

It's pretty basic at the moment. I bought it to support since I like to support indie devs. I probably won't play until the final release though.

By the way, also check Ostriv.

Out of the medieval ones, I think Farthest Frontier is the most mature one.

If medieval part is not important, Soviet Republic is the most complex one.

Thanks for the tips. I'll probably check out Farthest Frontier as it seems pretty great and has been recommended before 😊

No problem! Their final release should be close too. Have fun :)
