Nicotine really is a great natural pesticide.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 17 points 5 months ago

It's why plants evolved it.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 months ago

At 40%, it'll definitely kill all your pests, including the bigger ones like your neighbors.

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago

The tough part is to get the bugs to start smoking

[–] nova_ad_vitum@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Is that why tobacco plants produce nicotine in the first place?

[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

Can confirm, grasshoppers are voracious, opportunistic terrorists and yet, will barely nibble a tender tobacco leaf before quickly moving on to something else.

It's amazing humanity has survived. So many old products were like "Here's some concentrated poison. Spread it in your house, on your food, and in the air you breathe. It also makes a great toothpaste and eyeliner!"

[–] HappycamperNZ@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

And the longer we're alive we realise how much it affected us.

The next big one (assuming we survive climate change) will probably be the millions of ICE vehicles just driving around where we live and work.

[–] Supervivens@lemmy.world -4 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I mean this isn’t really poison tho. It’s just nicotine which is a natural plant product specifically evolved as a pesticide.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 23 points 5 months ago (1 children)

product specifically evolved as a pesticide.

A.K.A., a poison.

"Natural" doesn't mean "good" -- lots of natural things are poisonous.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 16 points 5 months ago

Natural, like hungry bears and cyanide.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 17 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I mean this isn’t really poison tho.

Go ahead and look into the toxicity of a single drop (30-60mg) of nicotine. Plenty of "natural plant products" that are poisons.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

And this is a 1 oz/28gram bottle, at 40% concentrate.

One can only hope this "nicotine concentrate" is itself not pure nicotine.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Doesn't really seem like you understood what I said or read any of what I linked. That's still roughly 11 grams of nicotine, so still several hundred times more than it takes to kill an adult by my quick back of the envelope estimate.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Yes, that was indeed my point. It seems like you didn't understand I was agreeing with you (not everyone on the internet is trying to attack you).

It's lethally toxic in a few dozen milligrams, and this bottle contains (up to) tens of thousands milligrams.

I was pointing out it's an absolute nightmare they sold this to random people in stores to "spray fruit". The nightmare is only slightly tempered by my hope that "nicotine concentrate" might only be a small percentage pure nicotine.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 months ago

Ah I see we actually agree. That's my bad. I'm so used to getting shouted down around here by people that didn't read very closely, I wrongly interpreted your comment. Ironic. I'm sorry.

[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

If necessary, I would choose nicotine over many current commercial pesticides. Nicotine doesn't help pests develop into superbugs with pesticide resistance.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

Uhhh what makes you say that? It very much does, as a quick search for "nicotine resistance" will show you.

[–] Floey@lemm.ee 2 points 5 months ago

Everything is poisonous at some dose. These are evolved neurotoxins for fighting insects but in the doses humans use them they are just stimulants and probably neuroprotective. They do have downsides like causing cardiovascular stress and creating chemical dependencies though, but people often don't die directly from caffeine or nicotine consumption.

This exact product was used in a case of intentional poisoning in Michigan:

That sheep on the left is completely dissolving!

That’s one way to get rid of scabs and ticks I suppose.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago

"Dip sheep" as in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

[–] MrFappy@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Is this how we were originally supposed to get Tomacco?

[–] nxdefiant@startrek.website 8 points 5 months ago (2 children)

FYI: Drenching - administering of drug to an animal, usually by force

They're gonna get that sheep absolutely wrecked on vape juice.

[–] coolteathatisblue@lemmy.cafe 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

You are not the only one think about using this shjt on vaping :v

[–] nxdefiant@startrek.website 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

400mg/ml might be a bit harsh.

[–] Reddfugee42@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago
[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago

"Drenching" is another word for deworming. Sheep are very, very prone to a variety of parasites. It's hard to keep a sheep alive at all.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Dried and shredded: perfectly safe

Boiled and concentrated: lethal poison

[–] letme_meowmeow@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago

Can I smoke this ?
