Where to find mobile apps

Hello new Lemmy friends!

Word on the street tells us our community is regularly making it the all page. While this is very cool news to hear, we can see how the sudden emergence of our posts in your feed might feel jarring and probably raises some questions. And also how, without knowing the backstory, our community might appear less than virtuous, so here’s a very brief introduction which hopefully will clear a few things up.

The woman we’re discussing is a body positive influencer and media personality who has gained fame and wealth by lying, manipulating, exploiting her children for content, plagiarizing BIPOC creators and blaming her BIPOC content editor for it (thereby ruining her career), among other things. Her fraudulent behavior is no different (I’d argue worse) from the likes of Jay Shetty (google him if you don’t know who he is or what he did). She’s the latest in a long line of grifting influencers who are abusing their power, taking advantage of their position and exploiting their followers. The difference is that she’s Canadian. Our laws around social media and advertising aren’t as clear (and where they are she’s disobeyed them), add to that, our mainstream media has protected her from those who’ve tried to expose her grift and silenced/intimidated anyone who’s tried to speak out.

Our Reddit sub was taken down due to reports of copyright infringement, which is unfounded and categorically untrue as no one ever tried to steal her work and pass it off as their own. The mods have made an appeal. While at first glance it may seem like we’re just “shitting on her” the sub has been more devoted to investigation and posting proof of her lies than just bitching for the sake of bitching. The reality is that she’s hurt, manipulated and let down a lot of people. She stole intellectual property and employment, caused mental distress and has repeatedly told lies to boost engagement and profit off her audience, so people are understandably upset that their voices are being silenced.

We’re grateful to have been welcomed so kindly by so many of you, and to those sticking around to watch the drama unfold, we’re glad to have you!

MODERATORS

As someone who was an avid user of the snark subr3ddit, is there anything that I can do to help get it restored? That the moderators are appealing the ban to R3ddit, but if there’s anything I can do to add my voice to protest would be happy to.

I understand wanting the sub back, on principle, but I think my preference is to stay on Lemmy. We can post without fear of takedown. I do also see that, unfortunately, Reddit has the profile and more people may become aware of her antics by posting there but I can also see that, in time, and maybe not a lot of time this could make its way up the search engine charts and people will come here. It’s super early to use with the help of an app and the people just seem more friendly

Honest question from someone who had permanently left Reddit last year, and not involved with this community besides reading a couple posts since y'all came over:

What are the reasons you'd want to go back?

Going back to a restored subreddit, you'd get the pleasure of having ads and disguised bot comments, and be controlled by the whims of cold-hearted profit-seeking corporate admins. What's more is you'd be closer to what I've heard as the "meta-snark" sub whose members appear to be intent on throwing shade at your kind of community at every opportunity.

I won't stop anyone from trying to get their old sub back, but I'd hope that maybe some people could find a new home in the Fediverse! If you need any help adjusting, I'll be around.

As someone who's still present on both (but mostly just trying to bring people to try out Lemmy from Reddit): access to a much wider audience.

The level of activity on Reddit, even if full of bots, reposts, karma farmers, and knowing that you enrich stakeholders, is still infinitely higher than Lemmy.

Hopefully this will change at some point, but for the moment, I completely understand why someone would like to get their sub back.

Also access to historical posts, and ability to organize a move.

You bring up very good points! We definitely have a long way to go before we have a mainstream sized audience. The ability to organize a proper transition would be nice as well.

Thanks for the kind offer! For me, it is more of a justice issue. The sub should never have been banned in the first place so getting it restored is like a small battle win in the larger war. I know it must seem petty to people who haven’t been a part of this community for long, but it’s important to show that we won’t be bullied into silence when we are bringing up issues of concern. I know it must seem petty to people who haven’t been a part of this community for long, but it’s important to show that we won’t be bullied into silence when we are bringing up real issues of concern.

That said, learning a new platform is a but jarring in my advanced age of early 40s😂 Does Lemmy have an app?

Does Lemmy have an app?

It does, see this thread: https://lemmy.ca/post/22652027

I wish you the best of luck in your fight for justice against Reddit censorship. Personally, I've settled into the view that the way to win against big tech is to refuse to play their game, but each to their own.

Does Lemmy have an app?

Yes! In fact, it has many! Each app has a slightly different feel depending on your style of interaction. Jerboa is what you could call closest to a 'first-party app' but in some respects it's more simplistic than others. Check out Blaze's helpful post on app and web UI options here: https://lemmy.ca/post/22652027

One more sidenote: you may find that the average user age on Lemmy skews higher than Reddit (see the Lemmy.ca census), which could mean you'd more easily find your crowd.

Thanks for the link and the info! Great to know about the demographic here, happy to hear it!

To get all of the content saved there.

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 months ago

Good point.

Stay on Lemmy. The admins here have decided they want you here, unlike Reddit.

[–] ladybonerforjustice@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago

True, we have felt very welcomed despite being a niche community.
