Does it run faster, have less errors? Just curious if it is worth it to add to my Unraid server. What is your experience?

IIRC, until the CORS adjustment PR is merged on Lemmy all requests have to be proxied through the Wefwef server. Self hosting could potentially be faster since there’s less load and a geographically closer server

I run wefwef in my own unraid server and I'm using NginxProxyManager. It works great but I really see no benefit, it's just for fun.

On the other hand, as a downside, whenever you update your docker container because wefwef got a new release, it takes hours for your phone installed app to realise there's an update and update itself.

If I use wefwef.mysite.com I'll see the lastest version. if i use the installed app I'm still on 0.12.1 eve tho I updated the container hours ago.

What OS and browser are you using? Firefox Android here, it gets the new version immediately after updating my docker instance. I refresh and the update pops up.

Edit: I'm using Firefox on Android.

Edit2: Firefox version 114.2.0 on Android 13

That sucks then, not sure why the behavior is different.

edit same versions as myself as well

If I uninstall and install Firefox, and then install wefwef app using my own server, then i'll be the last version. But I'd rather wait to autoupdate.

Yeah that is too much work for sure. I'd probably do the same. Last time I updated all I did after the container update is navigate to settings, then check for updates and it pops up immediately. I'll keep an eye on it for next time to double check.

Thank's a lot. I appreciate your work. I bet not a lot of people are self hosting wefwef, and every setup is kind of different, so i figured it had something to do with how I setup my docker or my reverse proxy, or even the web browser.

Just realized what I was doing wrong. I use Cloudflare Tunnels to connect to my docker container, the Cloudflare cache was messing with the update time.

I updated to 0.14.0 then purged cache and it inmediately got the update on my phone.

[–] tsac@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sweet, glad you got it figured out. How is your experience with Cloudflare Tunnels? I've tried to get it setup in the past and only ran into issues so punted on it.

[–] Feliberto@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was a gamechanger for me, with Cloudflare Tunnels I don't have to open any ports in my router. I followed Ibracorp's guide, it was a bit tricky but worths it.

I'm not sure if you can use CF Tunnels for things other than http protocol.

I guess I'll be trying it again then soon.

Got it, thanks for the heads up… so are you able to link the config folder in options? (Just pulled it on Unraid to check out the setup and don’t see a /config) And are there any good options to mess with (say change pwa icon or anything?)

[–] Feliberto@programming.dev 2 points 1 year ago

I just fixed the update issue I was having, it was Cloudflare cache that was messing with the update times.

I'm running a vanilla instalation and I'm using this link as docker icon, I had to manually configure it on unraid.

It was more important when we were being rate limited originally. Now not so much, but I'm largely keeping it until Sync is ready.

[–] DRx@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok thanks for the info… did you dig into the settings and customize any parts like pwa icons or anything?

[–] tsac@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Not on the container side, I just run the vanilla instance. On my phone I run Nova so I can pick whatever icon I want for the installed pwa app, but I'm boring so I didn't. After reinstalling it a bunch of times trying to debug stuff I gave up changing it.

I literally just installed the docker container on unRaid and it feels significantly faster than the default PWA. Running it behind my SWAG reverse proxy
